Returned Sunday from 8 days in West Virginia with no cell service. Loved it, hated to leave.

Where in Calif did you camp? which camp grounds? did you make reservations on line before you went? Seems like camp grounds would fill up fast. I would like to go- i grew up in Calif bay area and Santa Cruz i miss it...

Yes, were you mid-coast or in the north coast area? Hwy 1 just opened by Big Sur so I might imagine you were somewhere north of the Bay Area .... ?

Yes, this is all on the Redwood Coast northern California. There are many campgrounds both state, federal, and private and reservations are mostly needed at this time of year. Why the big AHhhh ! simple the entire time there the high never went past 68 degrees and the lows 52. In July

lots of NF campgrounds where you can randomly find spaces even in mid summer.

we were traversing NE california Sunday after the Oregon Coast Gathering, and spent the night at Cattle Camp Campground in Trinity-Shasta NF, was $7.50/night for NP Access Pass holders ($15 otherwise), no hookups, nice roomy well spaced sites in a forest, were only a few other sites occupied.

(we didn't even unhitch as we were just overnighting in transit... when parked, the trailer was almost level, unloading the tongue weight with the nose jack gave us dead level.)

You are lucky, south of you at Yosemite it is closed due to fires....can you determine any fires by smell?

if you mean me, we were at Cattle Camp on Sunday night... Monday we were in Reno, Tuesday we drove home to Santa Cruz. Yosemite is east of me, as of last night, the smoke from the fires was going down towards Bakersfield...

WOW, as of this AM, the new fire up near Redding (broke out Tuesday AM, I think?) has gone nuts and stretches over half the north State... The smoke from the Yosemite area fire is all the way down to Santa Barbara. I thought it seemed a bit hazy here in S'Cruz this morning, but its all high elevation and we can't smell it. South Oregon is a blazing mess, too (drag the map down to see Oregon)

We live in the Tehachapi Mountains, south of Bakersfield and Yosemite. We are definitely seeing the effects from the fire(s) as air quality is not good.

On the positive side, it does make for beautiful sunrises and sunsets, though!
