Campgrounds on Oregon Coast and near 5 for the return trip to CA
We will be taking a trip up the California and Oregon coast in September, expecting to get as far north as Astoria. Our thinking is that we will choose 3 or 4 campgrounds (probably state parks) on the coast and spend 3 or 4 nights in each. Do any of you have favorite campgrounds that you would recommend? We've stayed at South Beach SP in Newport before and loved that.
We will probably go up the coast and return via 5 stopping at maybe Silver Falls and somewhere near Roseburg. We like full hookups but can live without for a great campsite in nature!

Almost any Oregon State Park will be great. They're a gem! Try bullards beach or Harris state beach. Both great. Tillamook cheese factory will let you stay overnight and they're super nice and a great business. Have fun

Millsite RV park in Myrtle Creek is a small City Park with full hookups for $25. Just south of Roseburg and great for overnight. Very quiet too.

How about the Redwood State and National Parks along the northern Calif. coast? World's tallest trees, etc.
Our favorite is Patrick's Point SP. Then there's Jedediah Smith SP on the Smith River.
Honeyman SP/Oregon Dunes by Florence, OR., which is on the Siuslaw River.

For many, many years we went to the Nahalem Bay state park in Manzanita.
Every day we would walk down the beach to the town.
We haven't had enough continuous time to get there lately but we are planning on getting back there as soon as we can.

Thanks. We definitely want to go to Tillamook. They make the absolute best ice cream! And both those beach parks caught my eye. Glad to hear you like them!

Hmm. I found Millsite park but no CG there. Maybe they removed it. It’s such a pretty area though I’m sure we will find something else that’s good.

I have to disagree. Tillamook makes the absolute best extra sharp cheddar cheese.

We love Patrick’s point too and will actually start there camping at Azalea Glen. We were there last year and had such a great time we decided to make the north coast trip an annual thing. I will check out your other suggestions. We love river camping too!

Well we can agree on that too. It’s my favorite cheddar!

I don't want to argue about cheese or ice cream since I do like both from Tillamook, but the best cheddar cheese is from upstate NY - 10 year old 10XXX Cheddar from Colosse Cheese. Just bring your charge card!

Ya gotta read the labels on Tillamook Cheese. The biggest producer of Tillamook cheese is made in Wisconsin. True Story! IF the labels says "Made with pride by Tillamook County Creamery Association" it was made in Tillamook. IF it says anything else, like "Smile. You're about to eat Tillamook Cheese," it was made in Wisconsin. The creamery trucks the milk to Wisconsin and the finished cheese is brought back to Oregon.

We stayed at Nahalem SP on our pickup return trip in June of 2016. Nice park.
Only negative is that the campground is behind a huge dune so you don't get the feel of camping next to the ocean without a short hike. Wonder if all Oregon SP's along the ocean are set up in a similar fashion?
Canon beach is a fun stop for lunch or sight seeing.

Most have a dune of some sort. IF you've ever camped at the beach during a big storm, you would welcome 'some' shelter.

As a person born and raised in Oregon, I grew up camping on the Oregon Coast. Currently living in the Seattle area, we head that way at least once each summer. Favorites are:
1. Nehalem Bay - the beach is wonderful, the hike over the dunes is short and Manzanita is cute. Take a long walk down the beach to the jetty at the mouth of the bay. Time after time I have watched sea lions surfing in the waves.
2. South Beach - Newport is a cool town. The Oregon Aquarium is nice. Great bike trails and bikes to rent. Many activities in the campground. Fabulous guided kayaking trip in Beaver Creek nearby. This is guided by the state parks.
3. Sunset Bay - Southern Oregon coast is very different than the northern coast. Incredible tide pools. We found a tide pool exploration guided by a park ranger. Very cool.

We like Nehalem Bay and Harris state beach. Also Sunset Bay, and the nearby Shoe Acres SP are both worth a visit too.

One great free choice on the bank of the Rogue River in Gold Beach. Just off of Hwy 101.
Easy in. Easy out.
At least it was when we were last there. Things do change.
