Camping in Canada

Help!
We are planning on a trans-Canada trip in mid-August. I was looking at the PEI NP site and they have campsites as two-way and three-way. Am I right that three-way means full hookup and two-way is water/electricity?
We hope to be on PEI by September. Are reservations needed?

thanks,
Eric

We were there last summer. We didn't have reservations for anything. We always found a place. Yes, labor day is one of the busiest weekends of the summer camping season. Commercial places would probably have a spot but the parks would probably be full. Yes, 2 and 3 way hookups probably mean the same thing most places.

Thank you! I think we will plan on arriving at PEI after Labour Day and expect to stay at more commercial places on the way. We are looking forward to this trip!

How much does it cost to pull a trailer across that bridge that goes to PEI? Or the return trip-- I think they charge for only one direction.

Yes...only to get off. If you want to experience both the ferry and bridge (which I recommend) it is cheaper when towing a trailer to do the ferry over and the bridge on the way back.

Both the Confederation Bridge and the Northumberland Ferry charge only when leaving Prince Edward Island, so that one fare is for the round trip... regardless of which method you used to get to the Island.
bridge:
  • $53 (with single-axle trailer) or
  • $61 (with tandem-axle trailer)
ferry:
  • 2017:
Automobiles Up to 7’ in Height: $72.00
    Auto Trailer/Camper
    – up to 20' $72.00
    – up to 40' $99.00
Fuel Surcharge – Passenger Vehicles : $5.00 CDN
  • 2018 fares not yet posted, but will presumably be similarly structured... and won't be lower
It is not clear to me if the $72 charge for "Auto Trailer/Camper" includes the car, and what the length is supposed to represent. Assuming that it does include the car in both cost and length, cars and pickups would generally be under 40 feet (some pickups with and Escape 21' would be longer), so the fare would be $104. These are all Canadian dollars, of course.

The bridge is cheaper, so the less expensive loop route is to go to the island on the ferry, and back on the bridge. Compared to other travel expenses neither the bridge nor the ferry seem very expensive, so I wouldn't worry a lot about it; however, our plan for our next trip east is to loop through New Brunswick, then Nova Scotia, then ferry to PEI, then bridge to New Brunswick.

You can get fries and gravy on the ferry, but not on the bridge.

Ferry with fries? We're doing that!

The long bridge sounds fun, too. As suggested, we'll do both.

Planning on a trip with our 5.0TA to Nova Scotia this summer, likely July based upon weather and cultural events. Adding on PEI very likely, considering how far we must drive from Minnesota and how close the island is to NS. Any recommended sites, both cultural and natural, that anyone can suggest? Good campsites? Things to avoid? Thanks for the input.

It seems like we're not the only ones on a Canada trip in August/September! I'll be looking out for Escapes for sure.
I'm looking for recommendations for NS, too. We have reservations for the Labor Day weekend at Kouchibogouc NP and then about 10 days on PEI and NS. Has anyone stayed at Blomidon NP?
I'm drooling over the idea of biking the carriage roads! And the seafood.

I too am making a cross-country trip at the same time. What I've found, is the east coast campgrounds... where I wished to camp are full! Oh my. And Labor Day was even worse. What I had to do, was plan to camp on specific dates.. Winnipeg starting Aug 15 for the 50th Bolar Caravan, Labor Day in Gettsburg, PA, home by end of Sept. etc., etc. Then, I stated filling in reservations between each leg. I should have started this plan last November! If you don't mind overnighting in a casino parking lot, Cracker Barrel, WalMart or a wide spot in the road, you'll probably be okay. But, if there are specific things... tours... you want to do on a specific date, get your camping reservations made.

In PEI we stayed at Cavendish NP near Green Gables and Red Point Provincial Park on the other side of the island, both very nice.
Lunenburg has a nice campground right in town and walking distance to an historic area and restaurants.
If in Yarmouth check out The Red Shed on water street for great fish tacos and more.
We bought most of the seafood we had at either a fish store on the wharf or in a supermarket and prepared at the campsite.

Thank you, everyone. It looks like we'll have to make more reservations especially those days pre-Labor Day. I was hoping to not be tied down for every day of the trip but August days are pretty popular.
Our plans right now look a lot like Donna's. We're still not sure if we want to return through Illinois, South Dakota. I'm being pressured to visit Makinac Island. Linda's favorite movie is Somewhere in Time. Yes, Christopher Reeves was one handsome guy.

I'm also planning to be in this area late August-early September. I will be in Acadia np in Maine aug 11-25, and then hope to travel to PEI. My daughter is a big Anne of Green Gables fan, and I think I'll be able to convince her to fly in and camp for a few days with me. Looks like I better get going on reservations--maybe I'll get lucky. I can vagabond til after Labor Day if that will make it easier. There are worse fates, I'm sure.
