Canadian Atlantic Provinces Campground Recommendations

After picking up our new 21 in June and a wonderful three month 6500 mile trip home we're planning for our next extended adventure and are looking for any campground suggestions that members could offer.

Our thinking, especially after the great time we had in British Columbia, is to spend a couple of months late this summer and early fall of 2018 in the Canadian Atlantic Provinces. Although we're always open to camping in private parks we were very impressed with the provincial parks in BC and Alberta and we would tend to favor those as well as Canadian National parks as our first choices.

We've learned over the years that it definitely pays to plan ahead for the best choices of campsites and campgrounds so any help that forum members can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Chuck,
We had a great 2 week trip this past September in New Brunswick and Quebec. We stayed at Fundy National Park, camped at Pointe Wolfe, sites were a bit close together, the bay has a muddy floor so the water always looks muddy to me. Nice park but not our favorite though there is a wonderful restaurant in Alma (octopus garden cafe) that we loved. Kouchibouguac National Park, wonderful place. Huge private sites where we were camped, great bike trails and very scenic shorter hiking trails, amazing beach on barrier island, lots of bird watching. Bonaventura Island, huge gannet colony, wonderful hike around the island, camped in Perce at rv park (Nature Ocean) that was nice enough (great view) though the only reason for us to be in Perce was to get out to the Island.
Forillion National Park, gorgeous hiking along the coast. Nice campground, not quite as private but water and electric with a view of the water. Gaspesie Provincial Park, wonderful hiking, huge private site in the Mont Jacques campground. Du Bic Provincial park, along the Saint Lawrence, lovely site near the water, lots of bike trails, interesting to watch the ship traffic. Keep in mind if you have pets with you that they are not allowed in the Quebec parks. We left our travel companion at home for this trip so that we could spend time in Gaspesie and Du Bic. If you want details of any of the above just shout!

We stayed here this past summer, a delightful cg accessible by a free cable guided ferry, the cg is on a point in the St Johns River and about 15 miles from downtown St. John which has delightful seafood restaurants. There is also a nice "poutine place" at the ferry terminus, accessible by foot from your campsite.
Hardings Point Campground - Welcome!

Jane and Don - thanks for the very detailed reply. We're now actively doing our homework based on your suggestions and will likely take you up on the offer for more details once we figure out more about our probable schedule and route.

Before we had your information we had not given much consideration to including Quebec but, with your assessment of campgrounds and hiking/biking opportunities, we're now looking very closely that.

More to follow once we get better organized.....

Chuck

Jim - thanks for the reply.

Since there never seems to be enough time to do everything we want we're still in the process of trying to decide, with the help of some forum members, what we can actually do. I think I remember an earlier post you may have done about your stay in St. Johns and it's helpful to have the campground website available if we are in the area.

For both Yakanaka and David H - do either of you have specific recommendations for campgrounds and sites that we should consider?

Thanks

I don't have specific details since last time I was there we were in a tent and doing a very different trip. But national park campground bookings are released one park each day through January . They opened cape Breton highlands bookings this morning for the whole summer so if you want a spot you need to reserve soon. If you go onto the booking site you can put your trailer size and dates in and you can see where you can fit. They have photos of each site so you can look and see clearance views etc.

On my last trip to Nova Scotia, I spent some time at the Ponderosa Pines Campground to see Hopewell Rocks. Here is a link to that section of the trip. Use the index to see the entire thing...

Jon - nice blog and nice pictures. As we develop our detailed itinerary I may want to follow up with some questions via PM.

Thanks for sending.
