Care-A-Vanning with Habitat for Humanity
Please consider including a 2-week volunteering session or two with Habitat for Humanity's Care-A-Vanners this winter. They will hook you up with a low priced place to camp while you join like-minded folks to help others.
Check out: Learn more about RV Care-A-Vanners | Habitat for Humanity Int'l to get a better idea of what's entailed. Don't be turned off by huge bus the lady in the video is driving. We've volunteered in a Scamp 19 and an Escape 5.0TA and felt accepted. One lady in our group traveled with her cat and dog in Casita 16 and another lady had an R-Pod.
We did 2-week builds in both Sebring and Vero Beach. We enjoyed the experience so much that we are now working on an HFH house in a neighboring town.

What a fabulous idea! Combining your love of travel with volunteering! Have you found that there is a shortage of volunteers in some locations?

Thanks for sharing the Habitat link! This is something I really want to do…but probably need to wait another year or so. The United Methodist Church has an outreach called “NOMADS” NOMADS: NOMADS. They are, people with RVs that do disaster relief, as well church / camp projects. They also encourage any type of RV, but usually show the big guys. Nice to hear you saw some other reasonable sized campers on your trip!

If you scroll down on the site I sent originally and click on 'Register for a build' and then click 'RV Care–A–Vanner builds list', you can see the places builds are scheduled as well as how many volunteers they need.
Volunteering was a very positive experience for us,
David

Hi David
Just looked up your two spots. Vero Beach looks very appealing to me lol! Did you get to the beach much? How are you enjoying your 5.0TA?

We actually enjoyed the Sebring build better than Vero. We aren't really beach people. Others on the Vero build did frequent the beaches.
We like our 5.0TA a lot. It's an upgrade from our Scamp 19 in every way except gas mileage, which dropped a couple MPG with the switch.

It's not at all surprising that the larger (a foot taller, half-ton heavier, and 20 cm or 8" wider) Escape takes more fuel, but it's good to hear actual numbers. Thanks

Just "a couple MPG"... not precise, but at least it confirms more fuel consumption but not a huge difference.
