Chilliwack New Escape Trip

I have never seen so much fabulous scenery as on the Wyoming Bighorn Scenic mountain route today, U.S.14 and 14a. Could not get photos for any of the best --- steep winding sections with 10% grades many miles. Hope we don't have to tow the trailer on many such places at Banff and Jasper!

Interesting!
FMC Motorcoach

Trivia (from the 1973 Popular Science article): the rear suspension is somewhat similar to the Dexter Torflex used on most Escapes, in that it has independent trailing arms pivoting in rubber.

From the same article, but the part about the same-era GMC Motorhome, I note that "The refrigerator is all-electric a.c./d.c." Maybe they tried Dometic absorption-cycle refrigerators first and they didn't work well enough?

That is indeed interesting. Back in the day I used to watch "On the Road with Charles Kuralt" on CBS. Great show. He traveled around in one of these FMCs. They stopped making them shortly after they won the contract to produce the Bradley Fighting Vehicle for the US Army.

Interesting. PS article references GMC too. Rented a GMC in the 70's to go see King Tut exhibit in Chicago. Drove well even in Chicago traffic. I guess they still have a big following..

It only gets better as you continue, try to connect to 212 and head to Beartooth Highway.

Beautiful photos -- we were on 14 from Sheridan west -- it was incredible -- and SCARY with the trailer (for me, anyway -- Terry was fine) -- Awhile back we were on 14A which was similarly amazing

Cathy, have a good trip. We will be 5 weeks behind you and are just trying to figure out a different route from the one we took last year. Loren

I guess they still have a big following.
RV manufacturers who do something off the beaten track in pursuit of something other than low cost can attract long-term enthusiasts in their niche, while more conventional designs fade into history. Most of them have non-traditional body construction. Examples include the FMC and GMC motorhomes, and in trailers of course Airstream and the early moulded fiberglass travel trailers (such as the Trillium) from which Escapes are descended.

Beautiful scenes!!

Thanks for sharing, Cathy. I am excited for you, in part because our own travels to pick up are just a few weeks away. Please, spare no details!

Thank you, Mary and everyone! Mary and Loren, I know you are coming up next. I'll tell you whatever I can.

Ruthe, we will miss that route with our 21' but hope we are not getting those kinds of roads much on our Canadian trip.

Brian and all, you know FMC was a food company. I saw someone's comment that since FMC canned peas and carrots for babies, it was a natural for them to go into the RV business! LOL. The big car companies were doing the same back then.

Photo today in Montana. Think I goofed on the photo yesterday of the straw field as that was likely Montana also. Lots of straw and hay fields in both Wyoming and Montana. We saw fabulous scenery from Bozeman going west but no place to take photos. In Missoula now.

I think that maybe the Clark River, it seems we cross that at least a half dozen times while on I90 crossing Montana returning from Osoyoos.
