Dry camping in the desert-UFO's?

We've been out three weeks here in AZ, and yesterday we headed west (from PHX) towards the LA area where we will spend a couple of dizzy Disney days, then back to Sacramento to rest, refit, and get ready for our July adventure north.

Since we are a couple of days early we decided to dry camp in Quartzsite, almost exactly where we were three weeks ago with the Casita Gathering.

It's wonderfully lonely out here in the desert after almost everyone else has gone home. The clouds even parted for a while giving us a wonderful moonless view of the stars.

I was kidding Chris about this being the perfect scenerio to be abducted by a UFO. I spun the campfire tale a little too well, because shortly after that a couple of low flying UFO's (that turned out to be 2 two engine military transports) flying over the mountains on the other side of I-10 turned towards us. At the time, we couldn't really tell what they were. Add to that they were lit strangely, and what were they doing out at night?

As they approached, I looked over at Chris. She was looking a bit panicked, and ready to run.

Where are you going I asked her? To the trailer, I'm not getting probed by aliens.

Shorty thereafter we realized they were just airplanes. I wish I had a picture of that.

So this one will have to do.

Great photo (and good story). Your experience and that of others, made me research dry camping (sometimes referred to as "boondocking") as I've only done it a few times in my youth ... and not because I wanted to. Very interesting as I never looked at it as a way of life! (Boondocking Tips and Boondocking or Dry Camping in an RV)

Love reading about everyone's adventures here on the forum.

Did you visit the bookstore in Quartzsite? I heard from a person at work, who heard from another person, that it is an interesting experience meeting the owner.

Have not seen the book store. Perhaps we will check it out.

Boondocking is our favorite.

We will stay over again tonight, and then on to the Fantasy Springs indian casino in Indio where we will FREE dry camp another night.

Then to Buena Park where we will have full hooks ups and too many close neighbors.

The word to be heard about the bookstore owner is that he is a nudist. I heard that 2nd hand. Maybe they went in the store on a very warm day in the middle of summer and the A/C was down and he was trying to keep cool. Then again, maybe not.

Let me ask her. She said no.

We've been married a long time, LOL didn't really need to ask.

Well, that confirms that the 2nd hand information was correct. Never occurred to me to look on FB. Most of my book "reading" is from books on tape downloaded from my library to iPOD. This is one instance you can say, "I saw it on the internet", and it's TRUE!!!!

With the predicted high winds and rain for Southern California, we left the desert a day early and made a mad dash to Anaheim.

Except for the winds through the desert center, palm springs area (which were stronger than usual) and the horrific SoCal freeways, we got in before the storm hit.

It came in overnight. We awoke to raining and blowing, 20-30 MPH gusts, flash floods and mud slides in the LA, Orange County area.

We are hunkered down in an RV park weathering the storm.

So far, so good.

Stay to high ground. Those flash floods come fast and furious. Had a friend who tent camped in Death Valley. They were given short notice about incoming floods. Got out by the skin of their teeth.
