Escaping to Newfoundland

Tomorrow we will board the ferry in North Sydney, NS bound for 6-weeks in Newfoundland. We have ferry reservations for tomorrow and for our return on September 24. Otherwise, we plan to wing it.

We have gotten quite a bit of advice from Norm & Ginny, frequent forum contributors, and another couple as to places and things to see and do. We've been told NL is the friendliest and safest place in North America.

Hi: D&R_MA... "Stay where you're at and we'll come where your too"!!! That trip is on our "Bucket List". This winter we're going to stay in North Central Florida then coast over to Gulf Shores Alabama. To do the NFLD crossing next year we'd have to cut our winter stay even shorter than we are due to the "Losing Looney"!!! Enjoy the ride. Alf

Didn't take the trailer over there (too expensive) but Newfoundland was spectacular. The hike up Gros Morne is one of my top 3 hikes ever. Minimum casual conversation with a Newfie is 20 minutes--- they are friendly!

I'm not too keen on that ferry ride, so I'm planning on going to Cape Breton Island, which is via a bridge, not ferry. Hopefully next year.....Cabot Trail...

The ferry is easy enough. The boat is so large you don't even realze you have driven aboard. Expensive though, and you won't be allowed to stay in your trailer or even visit it duing the voyage.

Looks like a return crossing with two people and a combined car and trailer length of 34 ft is about $650 Cdn, which is next to nothing in U.S. Dollars. They also rent kennel space on the ferries for your dogs.

Hi David and Rosemary: Have a good trip! Newfoundland remains one of our favorite trips, even though we did it before we had our 19 Escape. Its good that you are getting tips, because there is lots to see and do- and it was all good. My top tip to you would be to make an effort to see a singing group called "Anchors Aweigh". They play every other night in the only hotel in a small town called Rocky harbour in Gross Morne National Park. They were hands down the most fun evening we had while there. They give you a warm welcome to their island, and a good introduction to the well known music and songs of Newfoundland. The scenery, the friendly people, the food, the music---enjoy it all!!

We lived in St. John's for three years while I was in graduate school. Newfoundland is a wonderful place with fantastic people. We loved our time there.

You will have the opportunity for a great time on your vacation.

Not as bad as I figgered -- had to look it up.

TV & trailer between 30 & 40' overall, plus driver & passenger, approx $320 for a 6-8 hr crossing, according to the ferry operator website.

Compared to $160-220 (depending on exact TV/trailer length) for same for 1.5 hr crossing between Vancouver Island & mainland, & a whopping $1,300-1,700 for same for 20 hr trip between Vancouver Island & Prince Rupert.

So if the Eastern trip is mortgage expensive, does that make the Western trip first-born expensive?

Happy travels.

Well, that really makes me mad. When we went on our cross Canada trip in 2012, we got to Sidney and they told us for two people , our tow vehicle and our 19, it would cost just under $1,000. It was too rich for us at the time so we didn't make the trip. We definitely would have done it for $650. BALLS !!!

$697.23 CAD round trip for truck and trailer up to 35', maybe less for shorter. Includes reserved airline-type seat, $37.50 outbound, $22.50 back, can't explain difference.

Hi: D&R_MA... That sounds about right for NFLD. Probably a shorter trip back Eh?
So far the cost of your tickets equals about what it's cost us to convert Can.$$$'s to US.$$$'s for the winter south. Now the extra health ins. coverage!!! Alf

If you are a light sleeper, bring a light mask for the "airline seats" as they leave the TVs on all the time and make pa announcments at all hours of the night. If cost was no object I would get a cabin.
