Fishing Tips -Glacier Nat. Park and Flathead Na.t Forest

Happy (almost) Spring! We plan to camp at Big Bend Campground in Flathead National Forest from the end of May into June and know some of you have canoed and fished the Glacier NP and Flathead areas. We like conventional and fly fishing, canoe trolling, shore fishing, stream fishing and hiking to those out of the way ponds for brook or native trout. We've never fished the area before but have been through on a previous trip and understand the fishing is outstanding. We plan on exploring Hungry Horse Reservoir, Lake McDonald and maybe venture over to the east side to try St. Mary Lake and the lakes near Many Glacier. Can any of you share your fishing, canoeing experiences and possibly give us some tips on both places to fish and well as great canoeing spots...and possibly areas to avoid? Thx!

Alas i am not a stream fisherman. But where you thinking of staying. The Blackfoot Nation has World Class trout. Duck Lake would be the closest ,to your area stay.Don't head to the lake if it's blowing from the west.Browns & Rainbows grow to throphy sizes. There are approx. 20 lakes on the res.,which all are set for trophy potential.Dog Gun,Mitten ...

We are staying at Big Creek (not Big Bend) Campground on the north fork of the Flathead River for 10 days. Duck Lake is off to the East but we plan to heavily explore the entire area and may go just to look (and fish). My guess is that the Flathead river may be pretty swift from spring snow melt but as you said there are numerous lakes in the area. We are definitely going to canoe fish some lakes and watch the wind forecasts closely. I would also like to plan a few full day round trip hikes to some good fishing lakes with wine picnics staged at the appropriate times. Thanks much for the tips!
