Galveston Ferry

Debbie and I are planning to attend the Eggshells in the Outer Banks Rally in early October, and are planning our route through Galveston, Texas. The Ferry connecting Galveston Island to Bolivar Peninsula looks like a lot of fun, and a good way to get back on I-10. The txdot website says the Ferry operates 24 hours a day and adds extra Ferries as traffic volumes dictate. It looks fairly straightforward; get in line and wait your turn, but I'm looking for experiences and advice for using this Ferry. Any do's, don'ts, or warnings?
Also, the better camp grounds on the island look like Sandpiper, Jamaica Beach, Beachside State Park, and Dellaneca CP. Any experiences with these parks would be appreciated as we may stay for 2-3 days.

Thanks,

I am a BOI (Born on the Island) as they say there but now live in San Antonio. It is a 15 or so minute ride across the ship channel and a good diversion from I10. The major issue is traffic backup but in October you should be good, just plan a weekday, perhaps mid to late morning time frame. Most likely you will need to turn you propane off. You are allowed to get out and walk about during the crossing. I do not have any experience with the RV parks you have listed but do note that Sandpiper is the only one in town proper with the others being a little further drive out especially Jamaica Beach RV park. There is a lot of history in Galveston, pm me when you get closer to the trip and I will try to give you some pointers.

Oh and if you are doing the I10 east thing from CA take a break here in SA. Great city. Could possibly meet you for lunch or something-we live 1 mile off I10 on the west side.

Like Steve, we haven't stayed at any of the RV Parks on the Island, but the ferry is pretty straightforward. It's free, and the wait times aren't that bad. If they have any requirements for your trailer (like turning off the propane, etc) they'll let you know. I've seen semi trucks on that ferry so a tow vehicle and an Escape trailer won't be a problem.

Your description of what to do is on target. Get in line and you will receive good directions as to driving onto the ferry. It's a good ride. I recall a ferry owned parking lot on the galveston end that allows 24 hrs parking and is a good rest/sleeping spot if you want.

The ferries at Port Aransas are also well organized and accessible to rvs.

The only issue can be wait times, but usually ok.

Thank-You Steve, Robert, and Viajante! That's exactly what I was looking for.
Steve, I will definitely PM you as we get closer. Lunch will our treat!
