We were at Many Glacier last year. Your pictures are much better than mine. We really loved it there.

Glacier is my favorite National Park. I've been there a number of times, in fact, my daughter got married on the shore of Lake McDonald & had her reception at the group campground at Apgar.

While I've stayed on both sides of the park, I prefer the West. Still, my favorite campground is Two Medicine, although it can be difficult to get into since it is first come. Apgar usually has empty sites as long as you arrive early. You can check the average & daily fill times for any of the Glacier campgrounds at the camping status page. Click on the campground & check at the bottom of the page for fill times.

Where ever you stay, be sure to drive out to the Polebridge Mercantile on the West side for a sticky roll or cinnamon bun. A great bakery!

I have a page of photos of Glacier during a 2011 trip here.

Think we stayed at Two Medicine back in my pre-trailer days. Agreed, western side is best.

Best for camping, that is. For entertainment after a fine dinner well served in the big dining room, however...

Glacier NP is my all time favorite Park. We have visited it many times since 2004. Two years ago I rode Amtrack from Vancouver,Wa to Essex, Mt stayed at Izzack Walton Inn, rented a car and toured both sides of the park in October.

What is different about the west side of the park?

I think the east side is more car friendly, less congested and I loved Many Glacier where we saw a good size grizzly up close.
West side is more commercial, more people, but I did love the lake.

Here's another vote for the east side of the park. We've tent camped at Many Glacier several times and thought it was great; it would be our 1st choice on our next trip to the park. The Many Glacier hotel was an awesome retreat and a welcome respite for a couple of wet and cold tent campers on several occasions. One of our all time favorite hikes was from the campground to Iceberg Lake.

Nice knees Don

Honestly, it's about expectations. I'm betting there's no two of us on this forum that wants to experience the EXACT same thing...

Lake McDonald (On the west side)

But, actually the best part of the park is the drive between the two sides!

Roger that. We got there a couple-3 days after a spring avalanche got cleared, then camped at Avalanche.

this is inspirational! So I think I'll stick with the original plan to stay on the east side. We've had to change other plans because we're leaving the east coast later than we'd planned -- which is causing us to miss the Escape Rally.

So we're about to leave and I'm mulling over our trip and then I remember that our son has a dog and that dogs aren't allowed on the trails in the national park. Does anyone know anything about the Flathead lake area?

Bigfork on the northeast corner is a neat village. I have eyeballed nearby Wayfarers State Park as a future stop en route Glacier NP.
