Heading East in March

We have our orientation/pickup on March 3 (there isn't a little picture that expresses just how excited we are but you all know! ) We plan to meander south on 101 at least as far as Nehalem Bay. But when to start east toward Utah? 20 across Oregon? 50 across Ca or too snowy still? Further south? We have 4-5 weeks to get back to Maine. We will watch the weather and change our route accordingly but want to cross off our list places that would be just too wintery still.
Thanks,
Jane and Don

Our pickup was March 20th. We made our way down the Washington and Oregon coast, and though it was wet, it wasn't cold. Then, across the Columbia River gorge, eventually through southern Idaho and into Utah. Both southern Idaho and Utah weather was really good by that time. Don't miss southern Utah and the Canyonlands if you can go that way. March weather in southern Utah is quite pleasant. Since you're eventually headed to Maine, from that point our paths would be quite different, but generally if you stay toward the middle to Southern half of the country as you head east, I think March is fine. The Appalachians would probably be great in late March as well.

And that it is. I have been there twice, and definitely plan a trip or two back there again. Kinda like a trip to Mars without the rocket ride.

There is a route in Utah called the "Grand Circle" where you can visit 5 National Parks, be sure and get your senior pass if not already. See here https://utah.com/national-parks/grand-circle

Also there is a couple of rallies near you, one in May in Vermont and one in September in Niagara Falls, Ont.

Where is the rally in Vt.? Would be fun to match faces to names. This forum has been a huge help to us in figuring out our build sheet and travel routes.

I'm giving up on predicting weather. My forecasts are just as bad as the professionals.

I'd like to say you'd be fine taking I-84 (east out of Portland) or Hwy 20 over the Santiam Pass during March. But the truth is, I've seen I-84 closed due to high winds and ice in March, and the Santiam Pass can be snow-covered in March as well. Hoodoo Ski Area is at the top for a reason.

So, be adaptable and watch the most recent forecasts when you're traveling.

Thanks for sharing this link. We will folder it for when we head that way. Sounds wonderful!
