Born and raised in SF ocean beach and lived across the bay...so a quick jaunt to HMB was really easy! Didn't matter what time of year it was as the weather was pretty much the same...fog in the morning...sun (maybe)...cool evenings.

Also would appreciate any cautions/warnings of things we should be aware of as we take our trailer along Hwy 1. Hi Linda,
I love that drive you are preparing for and have done it many times... although I haven't towing a trailer. I also don't know your towing experience but have a routing suggestion:
The drive down the Washington and Oregon coasts on 101 is wonderful. As is the first part of Northern California. You mentioned cutting over to Highway 1. I'd suggest instead of cutting over to 1 at the intersection of the town of Leggett that you wait and cut over at Willits ( Hwy # 20). The road from Leggett to the ocean is very twisty with lots of hairpin 180 degree turns. I'd have no concern about you alone on that stretch with your trailer but following very impatient drivers are a concern .... there are some pullouts ... but in this age of "Road Rudeness" inconsiderate drivers can sure add to the stress. Also, the oncoming traffic can get interesting when you meet bus sized RV's especially with poodles helping drive.... they will want the whole road to make those turns.

I have always liked Ft. Bragg (my Mom used to live there) and the whole surrounding area. If you unhitch, suggest you head back up to West Port and explore. Perhaps try out that road to Leggett unhitched. Hwy 1 certainly has the WOW factor.

Further to the North, just after Eureka, an interesting drive is to head over to Ferndale .... another PT type Victorian town. The drive out around Cape Mendocino (Hwy 112) is very scenic. You will meet sheep grazing with 100 million dollar views.... think it makes their chops taste better.

All the areas between 101 and Hwy 1 are very interesting and good areas to explore. I'm very envious of your trip .... need a scout?

Also summertime warm temps can bring out pretty thick fog.

I second Tom's statement about the cut-off from Leggett. I did that in a car a couple of years ago and thought at the time that I was awfully glad I didn't have my trailer with me...and I have the little guy.
