Severinus, your patience is amazing. It'll be all the more sweet when you finally get to camp in it.

Thanks for the update, Seef. I wouldn't have guess Knott as the axle manufacturer... usually those look more like a Dexter, but it turns out that's the smaller sizes. This one - presumably 1500 kg capacity - has a unique appearance... and the brackets don't have the side-mounting holes that the Escape brackets are designed to match.
Since the axle has a different bolt pattern (from the Knott catalog it looks like 5 on 112mm instead of 5 on 4.5"/114.3mm) different wheels were required. Are the original tires supplied by ETI (presumably ST205/75R15) still used, and if not what size did you get?

I do not know the exact bolt pattern but you're right, the original wheels won't fit, nor will the tires do.
Knott uses a different bolt pattern so we needed new wheels, in order to keep the same wheel hight we ended up using 14" wheels. At the moment we have standard steel wheels, still thinking about replacing them with these alloy ones.
What do you guys think of those rims?
Have fun!

I checked the axle specs and it turns out this axle can handle 1800 Kg, which should be more then sufficient for the 5.0.
Have fun!

Congratulations Seef. If you ever take your trailer down to Staverden, take a picture and post it. My wife's cousin (neef) owns the joint. It would look good on the Escape calendar. If anyone asks you where they can get a classic 5.0 (and they will) tell them we have a nice 2010 5.0 for sale. I'll even throw in the standard $200 (make that Euro) finders fee.(lol)

I like them. They look like the wheels on alot of European cars, like Audis and VWs.

Yeah Seef, a goo photo of your trailer in front of something obviously European, would certainly be an interesting compliment to the calendar.

What an amazing story so far. Mary and I spent some time in your beautiful country in 1991 - visiting friends who lived in Amsterdam and biking around.
Congratulations on the safe arrival and axle install. I hope everything goes very smoothly for you with the electrical modifications.

Hi Mark & Gerri,
you mean this place? Landgoed Staverden, een unieke belevenis - Beleef Staverden
I'll keep the 2010 in mind, who knows we can sell it for you when we're on the road.

That's a good idea, we'll see if we can get such a picture during our next trip...
Have fun!

Since 1500 kg would be just under the original axle capacity, I can understand going higher (1800 kg is about 3960 lb). I now see another reason for the cantilever brackets: while Dexter here will build an axle in whatever width you want, with brackets at whatever spacing you need (as long as the overhang isn't too large), Knott - at least in the catalog - offers only one overhang and widths only in 100 mm (4") increments.

If the original tires were ST205/75R15 (688 mm diameter), a close 14" match from the Knott catalog would be 205R14, so maybe that's what you have... but of course there may be other sizes they don't list. A similar choice available here would be a Kumho Radial 857 commercial tire in the same 205R14 size. I'm not sure why the original tires couldn't be used with Knott's 15" diameter x 6" wide wheels (steel or alloy), although I don't know if North American "ST" tires are legal in Europe.

I always prefer alloy wheels, and I noticed those alloys in the Knott catalog. I think they look good. I would just be a bit concerned that the nice face of the wheel seems quite far out, so it would be easy to accidentally scrape one on a curb... not that any of us ever misjudge a corner!

Hi guys,
well, what can we say, it is finally our christmas in august. Today the complete set of Pick-up truck and Escape got scrutinized by our DMV and the verdict is, PASSED!
Both the pick-up truck and Escape are street legal now!!!!!!
Today we picked the set up at the mechanix shop and we are very, very, very happy with it. Drove it about 70 KM from the shop to the storage facility, un-hooked it and now we are home enjoying a beer!
Just 1 picture for today, i'll be making more detailed pics htomorrow or the day after that so you can see what was changed in order to get things street legal here.
For now.... BEER TIME !
Have fun!
Severinus and Yvonne
