North Oregon Coast Suggestions?

On our way to pick up our trailer in Chilliwack, we are attending a small family reunion in Pacific City, Oregon for a week. None of us have any experience with the Oregon coastline. What are some must-see things in the area, from about Astoria to Newport?

About half way between Astoria & Newport is Tillamook. The cheese factory has a tour, and the Tillamook Air Museum is well worth a visit; even if you are not into airplanes, the old blimp hanger it is housed in is one of the few left in the country and an interesting building. If you are lucky, some of the airplanes will fly while you are there.

There are lighthouses to visit along the coast, and, along the Columbia River, lots of waterfalls.

Ever since 1974, when I had an office high inside the old dirigible hanger at Lakehurst, NJ, (where the Hindenburg disaster took place), I have had an interest in lighter than air flight. And, I have always loved cheese, so thanks for the suggestions.

Look up Oregon Tourism and order the pamphlets, magazines, maps.
You will be inundated with resource material.

There are 2 aquariums in Newport. One is associated to the university, the second being the Oregon Coast Aquarium. While the university one is educational (great for kids) we liked the Oregon Coast best. There is also the "world headquarters" for Rogue Brewery. If you like beer, this a must visit. Great food too! Both aquariums and the brewery are near the State Park and you can easily bike to them on bike trails. The Newport lighthouse and the associated trails is worth a visit. Also, take a walk through the older part of the Newport waterfront to see it's charm. Make sure you stop these the sealions hanging out on the dock.if you like fishing, you can charter a boat for a few hours to go get some halibut!

Cannon Beach is neat, and an overnight in Stephanie Inn is both priceless and pricy. Oswald West State Park is a walk-in area that is scenic with a remote feel. Depot Bay has a fishing village ambiance and I've heard second hand that tasty chowder is available. A bit south of Newport, near Yachats, is scenic Seal Rock SRA. All of this from memory cobwebs...

The museum that houses the Spruce Goose is about 45 minutes south of Portland. We stopped there near closing so didn't have much time, but it intrigued us so much we plan on returning.

There are some beautiful hikes near Cape Lookout and Netarts Bay has clamming and crabbing. There are several lighthouses in the area, too. I'm sure you'll enjoy the area!

Having bicycled this part of the coast three times, I'd say all of the above are excellent suggestions. The Lighthouse at Cape Meares (near Tillamook) was one of our favorites.

Good info here. Thanks Kathie for the Oregon coast info page. We pick up our 21ft. March 12 and will be heading back down the Washington and Oregon Coast for part of our return to Texas. There are some great options here. Kathie we are friends of John and Joanne who sent the videos of your trailer to us. Getting pretty excited, only a few weeks left. Hope for good weather for on the way to Chilliwack!

How exciting - nice to 'meet you'. I think John and Joanne moved up their pick up date to March. FYI - If you don't like driving through Seattle (which we hate) we cut over on Rt 20 to Whidbey Island and took the ferry at Coupeville to Port Townsend (a charming Victorian town). Ft Worden is a nice place to camp although there are lots of options in the area. From there you can head down 101 along the Hood Canal or take the scenic drive (the long way around) via Port Angeles over to the coast and catch 101 there.
