Oregon Hwy 20 road closure alternate route?
We are in Bend trying to breathe through the smoke and intending to head east to the Salem area this weekend. It looks like Hwy 20 is closed due to fires. We are considering Hwy 20 to Sisters then 242 east to Belknap Springs, then 126 north back to Hwy 20. Does anyone know how that route is for towing a trailer? Or maybe there is another route you would recommend instead? Thanks!

Actually after doing more research it looks like 242 is closed but 20 may be open. I'm looking at Trip Check and it's a bit confusing. Maybe we can take 20 but should expect long delays due to single lanes with a pilot car.

Do you need to go to Salem? I note you are from California. If heading south, 126 to Eugene is a nice road. Unfortunately with 242 closed, you would still need to get through the one-lane section of 20 to get there. So I guess the question is mute. Good luck!

Yeah we're from California but at the beginning of what was going to be a month long Oregon camping trip. We will just check road conditions and use 20 if we can otherwise probably aim towards 58 as we've decided to try our chances at the Waterloo county park instead.

Hwy 242
You do NOT want to pull a trailer over highway 242. That is the old McKenzie Pass highway. very narrow with tight hairpin turns. Very scenic in a car!

Ended up giving Hwy 20 a try and only had an 8 minute delay. We loved Bend and especially Smith Rock despite the smoke but are so glad to get a break from it. Perfectly clear skies here at Sunnyside campground now!
