Planning the Route After Yellowstone

I know it's really early (we don't pick up our 21 until August) but we are planning on seeing Yellowstone on our way back from Chilliwack to Chicago. We made reservations for Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone and will be using that as our base for four days in the park and seeing The Grand Tetons. My husband and I are newbies to everything involving trailers, including towing, and mountain driving. Our tow vehicle is a 2016 GMC Canyon Duromax. We want to ask about a section of our route after Yellowstone:
Perhaps staying over at the towns of Cody Wy and Buffalo Wy before continuing on 90 to the Mt Rushmore area and Chicago. We were thinking of driving through the park towing our 21 and exiting out the East entrance; spending a day/night in Cody. The next morning we
would be crossing The Big Horns by driving Cody to Greybull via US 14 , Greybull to Worland via 16-20, and Worland to Buffalo via US 16, "The Cloud Peak Skyway." This sounds more interesting then just going straight back to 90 from West Yellowstone via 191.
Any thoughts on the difficulty of this? Any suggestions ?

I don't know if you have been, but if not, a night or two at Devil's Tower is worth a stop. You have a choice of a KOA with hookups or the non reservable National Monument campground (dry camping). Both have sites with excellent views of the monument, and there are opportunities for hiking in & around the area.

We did that route from Sturgis,SD to Yellowstone to Tetons. Chief Joseph highway is very scenic but towing a trailer may be strenuous for a first timer. There is also Beartooth Highway another scenic way to get onto I90 from Wyoming, but a lot of switchbacks. Look at your route on Google Earth to see the road details.

Another vote for Devil's Tower. There is a prarie dog town just down the road from the campground. The prarie dogs are fun to watch.

Also, Badlands National Park isn't too far from Mt. Rushmore. The park has a campground with hookups near the eastern end run by a concessionaire. There is a primitive camping area on the western side of the park that is just an open area with no defined campsites.

We are going to yellowstone in June from Michigan. The plan is to enter through the east entrance. I will be watching this thread to see what folks have to say about driving that route with a trailer and all the must see spots in routs.

We will be in West Yellowstone the middle of August for 5 days and then 3 days in the Grand Tetons after picking up our '21'. I was able to make reservations in Riverton to see the Eclipse. Do visit the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody. Mt Rushmore is a must. The night show is unforgettable.

if you plan to boondock Canyon Campground is a great spot, the other sites are nice but not as secluded

if you are looking at other spots to visit check out Lava Hot Springs in Idaho Lava Hot Springs, Idaho Campground | Lava Hot Springs KOA

We stayed there in 2014 on the way to Osoyoos, be aware the hot springs are not in the cg but in town which involves unhooking and driving. Also, you should like trains as the mainline is right across the street, I enjoyed the sounds but some may not.

A few years ago at Yellowstone a ranger told us a story about 2 young gals who came running up to him for help in the middle of one of his talks. A buffalo was licking their tent! Apparently it liked the waterproofing they had used! He suggested that they sleep in their car.
