Southern Colorado, Northern New Mexico

Anyone have experience in these areas, is it foolish to even consider going there in July? Outside of Silverton on Mineral Creek looked great, but not that many places to camp. Also Rio Costillo State Park was huge and looks wonderful. but quite a long ride. We are outside of Phoenix and is way too hot to camp up on the Rim right now. This is our first big trip, welcome all input. Thanks, Marilyn

If you don't want to go that far, one of our favorites is Sunset Crater National Park N of Flagstaff and the Campground there is Bonito Campground. Big sites, dry camping over 9000 ft so temps are usually excellent. Lots to do, Sunset Crater NP is right across the street. $12 a nite with senior pass.
We are at our cabin in Lakeside AZ and the heat broke yesterday up here in the White Mountains. Projected to be a normal June week of low 80's low 50's at night. Fool Hollow is an excellent campground in Show Low and reservations can be made there.

Thank you Greg, you are always quick to jump in and help out. Will put that campsite down for a rest stop area on the way to Colorado. The fire in Utah
seems to still be putting out a lot of smoke, may just go to Rio Costillo in N.M.
Such fun!! Did have a health scare, it just makes life all the sweeter when you
come out ok. Changing my trailer name from "Bucket List" to something else, that turned out to almost be prophetic! Take care, Marilyn

Since we live in Santa Fe, this is an area we have happily explored. A few of our favorites are US Forest Service, so are reservable through Recreation.Gov and are beautiful. My highest recommendation is Junction Creek Campground, CO. It's 8 miles out of Durango, and there is much to see in all directions, both in nature and in towns. Some sites have electricity, but none have water.

Two more to consider are on Vallecito Lake, near Bayfield, Co: Vallecito Creek Campground (Creek runs through camp) or Pine Point Campground, on the shore of the lake.

Around Santa Fe, Black Canyon is really pretty, but no amenities, other than beautiful trees and trails. Though Santa Fe has LOTS to see and do and eat.

Do go! you won't be sorry...

Oh goodness, thanks so much for the recommendations. Will try to make it to all 3 over the summer, but Junction Creek will be first, Fell in love with the big trees and found more pictures of the stream (fly fishing even). It will be heavenly. After the 4th, hopefully can get a spot!
