The mountains in Canada, no matter which route, as stated are truly beautiful, Living in the mountains I usually calculate trips by time and not miles. If going the #1 to Golden the trip south to Cranbrook is 3 to 3 and one half hours,(the first half a little winding but following the valley so no big climbs) and then when you get to Cranbrook another 3 to 3 and a half hours west to Waterton. I think going Golden to Calgary on the #1 and taking the Bragg Creek turn off of the #1 just before you get to the city of Calgary to connect to Highway 22 would be about the same. If you take that route you bypass Calgary by a few miles. Calgary traffic is not fun with a trailer in my opinion. If you take the Golden- Cranbrook route there is a beautiful hotsprings pool in Radium along the way. If you want a little more remote experience, there is also another hotsprings just south of the town of canal flats. This hot springs( Lucier hot springs) is down a well maintained gravel road that leads to White swan lake and forestry campgrounds. It is about 13 kilometers along the road and is very hot with just rocks piled up to make pools before the water hits the river. it is maintained as a provincial park, so there are pit toilets and change rooms with a wide enough road and parking area to turn your rig around. Have fun researching!! Good luck.

I agree that Lussier hot springs in White Swan Prov Park is really nice. The hot springs can be quite crowded at times and the forestry road coming in can be a bit intimidating to those not used to having steep drop offs on the road sides without guard rails. But it is a really nice place and well worth a visit. It is also very close to the Kootenay and White Rivers which are well known for their WW canoeing opportunities.
