Lake Almanor area, at Chester, has some great campsites. What route are you taking to get over to 101? Hwy 36 or Hwy 299?

Durango RV park is a nice RV Resort in Red Bluff if you are looking for full hookups and a place to do laundry. Butt lake Ponderosa flat near Chester Prattville is a beautiful campground , if it is still open. Jerry, the camp host is the best!

I agree with Lassen NP and McArthur Burney SP, both have nice campgrounds. Lassen may be closed depending on when you go due to snow as it is high.

The only inland to coast road I have taken is 199 from Ft Bragg to Crescent City. It is a little twisty in CA but very drivable. I pulled my Escape 19 there in May. You will be going downhill for much of the time in CA. It takes you through Redwoods NP which also has nice campgrounds. If you go up I-5 there is a decent SP in Oregon near Rogue River, Valley of the Rogue SP.

I don't know 96, 299, or 36 but I do recall a sign at the Hydesville end of 36 advising caution if pulling a trailer. Any of these 3 would be challenging, I expect.

Just don't be surprised by the cost at Burney Falls - Last time I was there (2012) it was $35.00 for a dry campsite that barely fit my 17B. They do have showers at $.50 for 5 minutes, but they are quite a way from the campsites, at least the one they assigned to me.

On the other hand, it has one of the prettiest waterfalls in the US!

Burney Falls cost $35 per night in 2015, and the shower was near to our site. There was a $2 senior discount and an $8 reservation fee. CA state parks are expensive but we know the state is cash poor right now. I don't mind paying what it costs, and I bet it costs more than that to provide the campground. At least there was no fee for the dump station. And like you said, Jon, the waterfall is great. It was even great this drought year. The stream feeding it was dry one mile upstream from the falls. They explained that the rock structure has the water running under the surface then it emerges just upstream of the falls.

When I make a reservation, I always look for where the restrooms are and choose a site near one of them. Jon, you probably didn't have a reservation, right?

Nope. I rarely make reservations, so at least I saved $8.00 - I never know when I'm going to be where (other than rallies) on my long trips.

There's a Premier RV Park just off 101 in Redding (north of the city a bit). From there, we usually make it straight into into Oregon. Earlier this year, we stayed at Valley of the Rogue SP (Oregon), and then Champoeg SP. Both were very nice.

I spoke with a neighbor who used to live in Hydesville. He said DON'T take 36. He said 299 is a good road although it is certainly not straight or level.
