Techies and book lovers on a budget: avoid Portland, Oregon!

The Portland area is the heart of darkness for techies and book lovers who want to watch their money, due to the presence of Fry's Electronics, Ham Radio Outlet, and worst of all (or best of all): Powell's City of Books, which is downtown.

On the upside, sort of, Powell's has a parking garage downtown which will give you free parking for the day if you spend more than $100 in the bookstore. I qualified. On the other hand, that just gives you an opportunity to wander around downtown all day and spend more money elsewhere. I did.

I'm leaving tomorrow, much poorer.

Mike you are so right on Powells Bookstore. It's an amazing store and yes wife and I spent a bit there as well. A must see when in Portland. Didn't know about the garage, thanks.

Powell's garage is a bit down the street from their entrance on 10th Avenue and Burnside. It's on the left, adjacent to the store and is well-marked, so it's easy to find. The garage is a tight fit, though, with narrow one-lane ramps. I managed to get the Tacoma to the top floor, but as I was driving up the steep ramp I thought: ya know, this would be a really bad time for that big earthquake they're expecting out here sometime...

Yes, concrete garages with their highly tensioned rods within the floor slabs just waiting to be released after years of stretching to their tensile limits are earthquake magnets. Maybe street parking isn't so bad after all. Glad you enjoyed Portland, one of my favorite American cities that feels a bit European. Now if I can only keep my mouth shut when in Portland as the natives don't take kindly to me.

By the way Mike, is that a Panama hat? looks like one ?

It is a Tilley hat, made in Canada. In fact, mine is worn out, so in a few weeks I intend to go to Canada again and try to get a free replacement. I may buy an extra one as well, if I have recovered from my trip to Powell's by then.

They are sold in the U.S. I bought one or more many years back in the U.S.

Been to Powells in Portland also. Good place as was Portland.

Very very nice. I like hats. When we cross Canada in the near future, will see them. Am 101% sure I will buy one.

Think you are right Cathy. I have heard of them and assumed they were sold in the US as well. But should be a lot more exciting getting one in Canada since we are not souvenir shoppers and only get what we really need and use at home.

Oh dear.
Around here, we call them "Silly Tilly" hats.
You see elderly couples walking the seawall in West Vancouver wearing matching Tillys.
My hats are Filson. Made in the good ol' USA.

It hasn't rained at all in the Portland area this month. Natives are wandering around stunned, and tanned. They are confused and somewhat happy. I can see that mountain that I've always seen on postcards but whose existence I had doubted from previous trips. (I have seen it from the air, but I never really know where I am when I'm in an airplane.) Everything is nice here-- today in particular was a beautiful day. But an expensive one, sigh.

I have bought from Powells online, by the way. Don't think I am making it there again soon but wish I were.

Online is ... ok especially if you live far. BUT its a million times better to spend most of the day in the store, drinking coffee, eating and reading. We love the store. Another store I really like visiting when I used to visit New York city is B&H Photo. That is not as great as Powells but for that niche, it's awsome. I specifically like the owners (Hasidic Jews). But being on the west coast, online works ok.

I love my Tilley hat. It is frequently worn when on hikes or when I have any extended time in the sun.

Hi: Mike Lewis... Funny thing, I bought my Tilley at the Fleamasters Flea Market in Ft. Myers Florida. Great sun protection as Brylcreem hasn't put SPF in their hair cream yet!!! Alf

Isn't negativity what you harp on, lecture us and tell us your neck hair stands up over it? Mike Lewis has good taste and more importantly is a gentleman, something you don't seem to know anything about.

Glenn may not have good taste, but he does have a sense of humor...

Hi: cpaharley2008... The older I get the less hair I have. My Dermatologist says I need the SPF more than hair cream... but the Tilley will do nicely. Alf
