The trip to Jerome

Coming east from the Quartzsite rally through Arizona we elected to cross the state on local state highways instead of taking I-10 east, to get to I-19 to Flagstaff and I-40 east to home. That meant we could use the (shorter) hypotenuse of the triangle. Always nice to see parts of the Grand Canyon State you haven’t been. Had paper maps but for fun, we used our Garmin for minute to minute directions. It turned out to be a bit more scenic than expected.

We wanted the shortest distance to get to Flagstaff but needed to see new stuff along the way. Had been warned beforehand by a friend to not try driving towing over the significant Mingus Mountains. We already knew enough to not believe everything Garmin said, but, after Surprise, AZ, Garmin wanted to switch to alternate US89A, and that is what we did.

Before we knew it US89A became a twisting turning climb up and over the mountain. Would have been a great fun drive on a motorcycle or if driving a Mazda Miata. Then, we got to Jerome, AZ. I’m thinking, well now, this is going to be really interesting. Jerome is an old mining town founded in 1876. Think narrow streets like in Segovia but carved into a mountain. Ok, so not that narrow, but close.

After Jerome Garmin wanted me to drive the Oak Creek Canyon road through Sedona. Sorry Garmin. I decided no more hypotenuse crossings. Took the longer way around down to I-19 then up to Flagstaff. Once home I upgraded the maps and found out how to re-program for fastest routes.

Took the Sam route to Jerome in a rental car several years ago. You have my utmost respect doing it with a truck and trailer. [emoji106]

We have a good friend who lives in Sedona. Last time we visited, she took us wine tasting/drinking in Jerome. What a hoot! Looks great from a distance and even more fun when you arrive

Been on that road from Prescott to Jerome a few times. Not too steep, just a little curvy. Down the hill is Cottonwood, but Old Town is becoming a nice place to visit. Also- a favorite boondocks site is the hiking overflow parking area at Beaver Creek SP. which closed their campground a couple of years ago and is day use only. From there it is ten min max to red rock hiking.

A view looking back. Now that my nerves are settled t'weren't all um, that bad, and from this angle the town looks downright snoozy.

Do you mean I-17? We've driven 98A through Sedona to Flagstaff. We were pulling a 15' Shasta trailer and it wasn't a bad road. VERY scenic. But it was very busy also, I don't remember the day but it felt like a weekend. Would like to go back and spend some time in the Sedona area, at least till our money runs out. But there are so many places that "we'd like to spend some more time in".

We missed the road from Pescott to Jermoe. I think we did drive the Jerome through Wilhoit and Nothing to the Burro Creak CG. Nice country.

Have a good trip home.

Thanks.

Thanks for catching that, Hugh.

Jerome should be on everyone's bucket list. It's my favorite haunted town

We went there in a rental car in an ice storm a few years back. I couldn't image that hill with a trailer.
