I agree with Brian in that this is a pointless discussion more suited to political meetings. Right Glen?

I've found, having been a moderator since inception, that there are almost zero examples of inappropriate posts. And, that when there is one, if it is ignored, it quickly dies.
The members of this forum aren't looking for a fight, unlike some other forums.

Fuel costs? No matter where you travel.. IT IS WHAT IT IS. If you don't budget, don't know your tug/tow limits... SLOW DOWN. Expect to pay premium prices.

I don't mind rants... I just decide not to read... YMMV

In case anyone isn't already aware of it, there are mobile apps which provide fuel price information. This can be handy to pick a refuelling point which might be a few dollars a tank cheaper, and in advance planning it can help with setting budget. I use GasBuddy, but did not do a comparative search (just followed a suggestion and found it useful). They are available for all platforms... for instance, I have used GasBuddy on Android, iOS, and BlackBerry.

I found a great map system, Good Sam and I can download the map to my GPS. They also list Flying J locales and with distances listed I can guesstimate my next fuel stop. Nice set up they have. They can also list cg et al, but the gps also does that.

We are in Santa Fe, NM tonight heading toward CO. High gas price (we paid) was $3.59/gal. Of course they raised the price just as we started. Like Donna said, "it is what it is" and we will deal with it as we go along. New blog post coming soon.

Robbie, thanks for the book but as you already know we won't be in Kerrville this weekend. See y'all at Matagorda in the fall.

B.C. gouges in gas taxes, while Alberta doesn't IMHO.

Nothing is simple. Alberta has no sales tax, but has higher income tax for middle and low income citizens. Heard a discussion on CBC about fair application of taxation, where this came up.

Gas prices are almost always a bit higher in BC than Alberta. Just have to accept that and enjoy yourself while in BC. BC has many many great qualities that more than offsets the slightly higher gas prices.

Truth.

It is just a cost calculated into your camping pleasures. Though I sure am glad that here in Alberta we still don't have the extra provincial taxes added in.....yet.

Skipping a more general discussion of Alberta versus B.C...

Whether or not it is "gouging", yes, B.C. taxes on gasoline are higher. Among other differences, there is a "carbon tax"; B.C. prices in general will be about 10 cent/litre higher than otherwise similar locations in B.C., so I plan fuel stops for the Alberta side of the border if reasonable... and the last Alberta community before the border will have higher prices than only a few minutes further into Alberta, based on market pricing forces.

Even within B.C. there are differences in fuel tax rates. The most noticeable is the roughly 10 cents/litre added to support the transit system in the municipalities served by the SkyTrain; if you drive in to Vancouver from Chilliwack or the Okanagan, I suggest filling up by Aldergrove at the latest, as you'll see prices climb rapidly by Surrey.

Kamloops is a low price island within B.C., but that is unrelated to taxes.

You can see all of this in any map display of gas prices, but knowing these general trends may be helpful.

Gasbuddy.com is a resource for keeping up with local prices, wherever you are. They have an app as well.

Yep, that's the same one I mentioned:

I assume that anyone looking for "GasBuddy" would try "gasbuddy.com", or do a Google search for "gasbuddy"... which finds GasBuddy.com - Find Low Gas Prices in the USA and Canada as the first match... but Gasbuddy.com works as well (gets redirected).

We Made It Home!

We have been home for a couple of weeks now and I have finally completed the trip blog. It was an incredible trip with a lot of great places and people but it is still good to be back home.

Jim,
We came close to stopping at the PA rally but we decided just to head on back. Maybe next time.
