Tioga Pass Opens 5/2!

Left Death Valley this morning...wasn't much cooler in Morro Bay the last couple of days. Camping in Alabama Hills above Lone Pine today, but heard they are opening CA 120 across Tioga Pass to Yosemite tomorrow at noon. That's very early; a few years ago it wasn't until around July after using dynamite to clear heavy snow/ice. Hope we finally see another Escape.

Given the water situation in California, I'm trying to understand how Safeway could sell me corn on the cob last week, from California, for 50 cents a cob.
What with refrigerated trucking, Safeway's cut, I'm thinking the farmer got maybe a penny.
Was excellent corn too.

Where are you headed next after crossing the pass?

Looking at the weather we might stay put here for a while looking at Mt. Whitney. Its still cold in the High Sierra, and it could snow again, although not too likely. We're at 5800' with 75/50 temps. Ahhh. But that warm spring water pool at Furnace Creek Ranch was like going back in time, and many people who camp next door at the Nat'l Park campground don't realize they can use it for a $5 fee.

Since I got it 6 ears for $1.00 last year, I will be difficult to part with more for less.

Just hang to your hat. Everyone in our County just went on water rationing yesterday so things are going to get interesting. Beef prices have gone through the roof since the ranchers are selling off their cattle because 'no water' equals 'no feed' and I'm sure veggies and fruit will be following close behind.

Jan- is it true that Felton got rid of their for profit water purveyor? Back on topic, we are in Lone Pine campground...no showers but seriously 4-star pit toilets and a view of Mt. Whitney that could only be better from on top of it. Trout looking like koi in a pond in the stream flowing off the Sierra. $19/nt.

Not sure which for-profit it was. Do know that they bought the neighboring water system whose residents were days/hours from being bone dry (and another system a year ago which was owned by a German company). Now we get to conserve even more ...

Good to know that Lone Pine is nice. We have visitors from Australia who are camping the U.S. for five months and Lone Pine is on their agenda. Have fun!!

Well anyway, our neighbors and we are paying $150-300/mo. Praying for El Nino. Your Aussie friends remind me of how it is so easy to ignore one's own backyard. Have lived in CA since 1972 and have passed by this spot many times going skiing. It is a special place and the Alabama Hills are a trip with a Western movie history.
