Tips for good long term stay park in Rio Grande Valley?

Our plans for this winter might be changing from going for a couple of months to AZ and NM to only one month or so in Southern Texas.

Does anyone have any idea about a good park with monthly rates to stay along the Rio Grande?

My Mom is a full timer who spends her winters (in a massive 5th wheel with three slide outs) in the Rio Grande valley. I'll ask her -- she'll know.

The Casita folks stay in a park in Lajitas, Tx in January. I know a couple Escapes who used to be Casitas, were planning on attending (its an initation only Casita rally tho). I think its called Maverick RV park. I investigated the area and was nearby last year. Gorgeous, close to Big Bend, and all the cool Texas towns down there like Marfa, Fort Davis, Alpine, and Terlingua. I think Fort Stockton is the shopping hub and El Paso is a few hours away. A heck of a lot of history and the place fills up with winter Texans so you'll have plenty of folks to watch hockey with.

Not entirely true but it'd rather not rehash that again....

She let me in and emailed me that another former Casita owner is bringing their Escape. They only take over a corner of the park for a week, the rest is open. Her rally, her rules but it is very well attended.

Gregg is right, I just found it kinda funny. Casita really does translate to "little house." Not trying to mix it up. I like Arizona Eileen, truly. She and I communicate a lot on Facebook.

A correction, if I might. Lajitas, TX is actually close to nothing, except for a couple of very grand State and National Parks and Terlingua (a former mining and ghost town). A round trip to El Paso is probably a 20 hour trip pulling a trailer.

If you are self sufficient and like isolation, desert flora and fauna, Mexican culture & history, frontier amenities, hiking & exploring, then you will love Lajitas. With the exception of some very fancy airplanes that use the landing strip, you will find very few trappings of civilization in Lajitas. Don't count on your cellphone to have coverage - probably varies with carrier. I hope to spend a couple of months in the area next winter - with luck, but it is not for everybody.

That's right Alan. We love it there because of the quiet and the amazing night skies. Also, it's not the valley, the location inquired about by the op.

I guess I started that wild goose chase. Not being a Texan, my geography instincts told me the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas might have a teeny bit to do with the Rio Grande River running thru south Texas! Lajitas es muy cerca.

An honest mistake Greg. But, Lajitas is in West Texas - over 600 miles away from the valley by car. The "valley" as we call it is a large region south of San Antonio all the way to Matamoros. Think "King Ranch" of Texas folklore, the town of Kingsville named after it, or Harlingen. That's the valley.

So Mom says what part of the valley? She knows of several good places, with an average rate of 250 a month plus lights, but tell me which area and she'll let me know which is best.

OK Adrian, here's the info:

Mom looked at 9 places that were recommended by camping buddies. Her recommendations are either Palm Gardens or the VIP in La Feria. They offer the most for your money. The rate has gone up however to $425 a month plus lights. Both parks are very nice and clean and are close to Harlingen, and South Padre Island. There are alot of social activities as well such as dinners, dances, games, group outings, swimming etc . Mom also found a few that have nothing to offer but the site - and they are not very well kept. You can get some for $175 plus lights but as Mom says "no way would I stay there."

The valley is of course famous for it's RV parks. In the winter all the newspapers on the front page say something like "welcome winter Texans". The ads are usually almost exclusively devoted to RVers, activities, discounts and things to do.

Thanks Robert will check those out. It's funny but yesterday met someone in our town who has a place at VIP and loves it. they are leaving here Nov 6 until April!

Yessir. The mass migration is already started. Someone said that the population of Texas grows by more than a million people every winter due to RVers heading south. Enjoy wherever you stay!
