For nature and wildlife, you should consider visiting the Hoh Rainforest, part of Olympic National Park in WA. It’s a true rainforest. Not too many of those in the US. It’s right along the way after you follow your US/CAN border route west as far as you can go without going in the briny drink, then turn south towards Oregon on 101.

Something else that’s pretty special, particularly for nature and wildlife, is a section of coastline that’s part of Olympic National Park that is still wilderness. It’s some of the most primitive and wild coast that’s left on our shores. https://www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvis...ness-coast.htm

Lots of other great places to see in WA and OR. Lots.

And don't forget to meet the people-sometimes I have met the most interesting people in some otherwise (to me) uninteresting places. Never fail to follow your own muse, because then everything you find will be genuinely your own adventure.

As a "framework" to give some structure to your travels, if you are a member of AAA, you might pick up free copies of their regional TourBook guides of the areas you expect to pass through. Mark whatever interests you and give it a try. Yogi Barra's travel advice is still about the best available: "When you come to a fork in the road, take it." You are unlikely to be disappointed.

Happy travels.
One of my favorite things to do is travel thru rural Texas and stop at the town squares where the old court houses are. Old duffers like myself are usually sitting around on the benches and solving world problems.

Most are farmers like myself and I have spent many enjoyable hours talking about what works and what doesn't.

Many simple pleasures are close to home.

While not the coast, on the way drive to the end of the Mt. Baker Highway (WA 542) and check out Picture Lake & Artists Point. Just try to avoid foggy days - the views are wonderful when it is clear.

One of our favorite 2ndary road drives was across NE, from Omaha to Custer SD on 275 and 20. Who'd a thought the terrain in NE would be so varied. Expected to see nothing but 8' tall corn.

Badlands is in South Dakota, however the North Unit of Theodore National Parl has a magnificence all of its own. (I worked at both locations in my NPS career) When in South Dakota however, don't miss Wind Cave and Jewel Cave near Mt Rushmore

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan has a lot of beautiful places, including Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

we did that a few years ago, gorgeous place.

buncha photos from that area, many of these are 'Photospheres', where you have to click on the circular arrow in the middle of the picture and wait for it to load the sphere, then you can drag it around 360 degrees left/right/up/down...

yeah, same technology, except the street view camera takes all the images at once with about 12 different cameras, while I'm using a single camera and going around the sphere taking them sequentially. in fact I took those pics with a google pixel phone... the default Google Camera has the mode to take these.

Looks like one heck of a drive.

Thanks all for the suggestions, adding them to a Google map and I'll hit what we can as we go.

Bob, I don't suppose you'll be in Oregon next October and could attend Fall NOG? We won't know where we'll be until Saturday night of THIS year's Fall NOG. But you know, I'd love to meet you! As is said, you may never pass this way again....

Just crossed that route west to east 6 weeks ago. Lots of construction on RT 2. Rt 20 is spectacular if you like mountains. Check out the funky little towns of Winthrop and Twisp on the east side of the Cascades. We were no fans of the trans canada from Sault St. Marie to Montreal as it is mostly a 3 lane road with passing lanes. Lots of snakes. North portion of TRNP was less crowded and had better hiking than the southern portion.

Pine Near Campground in Winthrop is a good commercial campground. It is within walking distance of downtown. I was there in 2015.

You can't pull a trailer on the road to Lake Louise, so when you are in Banff, visit Lake Louise while you are unhitched. I found this out when I tried to visit the lake when going from Banff to Jasper in 2017. I had to skip Lake Louise.

I'll mark it down. No idea of a time table at this point but you are probably right. An early guess would be we'd head home in early Oct, it being a 3 or so week drive.

Good to know, now if I can only remember it.

It looks like wherever we land, I'll be in (the park) on Wed., Sept. 30. The event is the first weekend in October... that's Thursday, Oct. 1. If you just 'keep it in mind' that good!

I would not try Mt Baker with an RV. Some of the switchbacks on the upper region a horse could eat hay out of the back of the wagon.

Yes, I should have mentioned leaving your trailer at the campground. There are a couple of nice Forest Service campgrounds on the highway before it gets too tight, but they are often fully reserved.

Not taking a trailer on a road to a summit should be a given.

I was up there yesterday and about 500 ft from the summit, I was crawling around a switchback at about 10mph and two bikes pedaled past me! No way to know where they started, of course, but these guys were standing on the pedals and pumping away.
