US pups traveling to Canada
Leaving in a few days to pick up my shiny new 19 in Chilliwack! The excitement is building and looking forward to having a good trip.
I plan to bring the boyz, my two male mini Schnauzers along for the trip and was wondering about the border crossing adventures that may be in store.
I went to my vet, which is Banfield veterinary hospital and got a health certificate and rabies vaccination doc. I'm not sure if I need anything else. Don't want to be stuck at the border.
I want to make sure I have all that is needed to enter Canada from California. Has anyone else made this same trip with their pups?

We have taken Murphy-the-Dog to Canada several times. No problems, we just bring the record of his shots etc. As a side benefit, he barks at the border patrol people. not viciously, but he is annoying. It seems to shorten the inspection times. That said, I haven't had any problems crossing. A couple of quick looks in the trailer, but that was it.

Have crossed twice now with 2 dogs, all without incident and all without anyone asking to see the documentation.

Best look up regs on dog food. I think food in factory sealed packages is OK, although I've never been asked about it.

As long as the dog food was made in the USA there is no issue bringing it back.

Unless the package has been opened.
- To bring food across the border it must always be in its original packages – do not carry it in plastic containers. Any pet food in non-labeled packages may be confiscated.
- The label should show where it was produced.
- The ingredient list should be clearly displayed.
- As of this writing, products containing sheep, lamb, or goat will not be allowed into the U.S.
- Your best bet for getting food into the U.S. is to have unopened bags that state the food was made in the U.S.
- When entering Canada, you may bring no more than 20 kg, it must be of U.S. or Canadian origin, and the pet that will eat the imported product must be with you.

Too many times to count with several different dogs. Never ever been asked to show proof of shots etc. but we always have proof with us.

There is no need for proof of anything other than rabies, and they won't ask for that. We had no trouble going up last year to the factory with our used Escape from WA and crossing back over, except we lost an orange that was missing it's sticker. The border agents were happy the dogs were crated in the van so they could look through it without issue (not that there would have been any from my dogs!). Easy peasy, and even easier for you because you won't be crossing in with the trailer! Have a great trip!

I handed them the rabies certificate along with our passports, no problems. I don't recall what we did with the unused kibble coming back into the US, it would have been in a Ziploc baggy instead of the original bag. Never even thought about it!

Our blue heeler is looking forward to being an international cattle dog! She is such a good traveler--hoping that if we have any issues crossing the border that her sweet blue face will help us out!

We didn't have a problem with the dogs at the border in Sumas. We had their registrations and rabies shots and something the vet called a certificate of health, but we crossed there and back without ever being asked for any paperwork on the dogs. It was very uneventful.
The only thing we were asked about on the way back was citrus. Apparently you can't bring citrus from the US into Canada and then back.

Thanks to all for their input. I wasn't worried, but it's better to ask and be sure if ya can. First trip to Canada and should be fun.

Best selling beer in Canada is Budweiser; McDonalds and Starbucks everywhere, so you can't get homesick. Gas stations and grocery stores might have unfamiliar names, but they are all still filled with Kraft Foods products.
In the morning, my wife watches the Today show or WDIV Detroit television news, or KTLA.
You'll only be shocked by the gas prices.

It'll be like visiting a friendly neighbor. Looks like Tim Horton has a lot of places around Chilliwack and may check it out. Hopefully the gas prices will be lower than California.

If you walk from Tim Horton's to ETI, your coffee will have cooled enough to drink.

It's going to be hard to tow the trailer home if you walk.
