Bryce Canyon too does full moon hikes. We were tempted to stay one more day to take one in, but had plans to meet up with friends who live in St George, just outside of Zion, so had to leave.

Well, I do not have an Escape out my back window just yet but a virtual one is taking shape, June '17.

We just got back from a few days in the lower St. Lawrence area of Quebec (Rivière-du-Loup, Rimouski) for some sightseeing and whale watching.

We drove downstream on Rte. 132 stopping in St. Vallier for some maple syrup laced soft ice cream and in Kamouraska for a wonderful smoked meat sandwich (local beef and smoked onsite), here:

La Fromagerie du Terroir de Bellechasse - Accueil

Accueil - Côté Est Kamouraska

Having once lived in Quebec City, I know the area fairly well and I was amazed by the progress in the tourism sector with no shrugging of shoulders when English was the only language spoken by the tourists for example.

I did not check out camping sites except for the obvious ones jammed between the highway and the river (crowded, way too busy and certainly noisy.)

There were certainly lots of TTs on the road, no Escapes that I could see unfortunately. I must have crossed paths with a dozen or more properly kitted-out VW Westphalias, the real ones that once had flowers all over them.

Even if there is no Escape behind the truck just yet, I am enjoying its virtual cousin as I view longer drives through a new lens.

The Seattle Times recently did an article on renting one of these that was great fun to read:

Thank you for that interesting article! And I now know how to spell WestFalia à la VW. I laughed when the writer suggested starting the engine for heat. VW air cooled engines did little to warm the bugs during a Québec winter. Also, they were not known for silent running so camp neighbours might not appreciate one's need for warmth.

Having said all of that, I am sure a grand time can be had touring in a westie.

Yes, but the rental was a 1991 Vanagon (T3), which has a water-cooled engine; pre-1983 T3's and the earlier generations were the air-cooled ones. On the other hand, I was surprised to learn today that a Vanagon Westfalia wouldn't have a furnace; apparently the same Atwood furnace previously used by Escape and the Propex HeatSource are common aftermarket additions.

Heaters and trailer mirrors...more frivolous luxuries perhaps?

Earlier Westfalias would typically have an auxiliary heater - like a Beetle used in a cold climate - which could be run for a few minutes to warm up the camper. I suppose the Vanagon Westfalias just suffered from being a warm-weather camping product. There wasn't much extra in these things - no lane departure nanny, no built-in WiFi hotspot...

Absolutely no cruise control either I'd guess.

Aiken SC State Park

We have been here 10 days intertaining granddaughters until school started yesterday. 3 other units in the park. If we did not need the AC this would be the second quietest campground we have ever stayed at.

Not enough bandwidth to upload a picture
