Life on the Mississippi

The Mississippi River is out my back window now. I am at Blackhawk Campground, a Corp of Engineers campground near De Soto, Wisconsin. It's pretty nice, and the area is quite scenic with high bluffs looking over the river.

At around 4PM every day a bald eagle swoops down, snags a fish from the channel behind my trailer, and flies into the trees. I've tried to photograph it two or three times but the bird is too fast for me. I'm no wildlife photographer, it seems, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

You place looks serene and lovely, you chose wisely to be there, Mike. I feel sorry for anyone on West Coast right now.

I saw my first midwestern Bald Eagle fairly near where you’re camped in 1970. They were pretty rare then l, in the waning days of DDT. My friend DD Weymiller and I were taking his tugboat down to Lansing, Iowa from where it had been moored near New Albin. Iowa
We cooked a gourmet meal on the manifold of the GM 671 diesel and toasted the day with a couple of icy Buds. It was 35 degrees and the ice was coming in. Never forget good times with good friends.

I'm on a little island by myself, which is where about ten boondocking sites are located. But the rest of the campground, hundreds of sites, has hookups, and those sites were all filled when I arrived on Friday. But I like it where I am; it is indeed serene.

This area is on the western edge of what is called the Driftless. It's an odd name, and you can look up the full explanation on the Internet, but I can say that this area of Wisconsin was never covered by glaciers during the Ice Age, thus preserving its rugged topography.

I can see a Great River Road trip in my future, where I go from one COE campground to the next, along the upper Mississippi River.

Driftless

Hi Mike
On the Iowa Side of the river, though not COE, is the Yellow River State Forest. Good camping there too. Just outside of Marquette Iowa is an Environmental center dedicated to the driftless area. Pretty interesting. In Decorah Iowa is the vesterheim which is a museum dedicated to the Nordic history of the area. Mabes pizza in Decorah is good too. I’ve been visiting those area for many years and always enjoy the Driftless area. If you go west and a little south to Spillville Iowa you can go to the Bily Brothers clock museum. Their house guest one year was Antonin Dvorak who wrote the new World Symphony. The meat locker in Protivin has good meat that you can’t buy just anywhere. Czech your billfold before going in, you’ll buy more than you need.

Iowa Dave-

Wow, thanks. I'll have to remember all this for my next trip through here. Unfortunately I'm headed to Chippewa Falls tomorrow to visit friends. I'll come back sometime.

Lake Superior Waterfalls

Sometimes it is not what you see outside the back window but what you can hear!

We finally got a chance to use our Escape 19 this year. Last week we camped in three locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Each place we could hear waterfalls in the background - and when the winds piped up in typical Nor'easter fashion on Lake Superior the waves on the shore were the dominant sound.

Besides the waterfalls we camped near (Big Manitou, Cross River, Amnicon), we visited many others on the North Shore. It was nice to camp about mid-point of the shore and to be able to drive the TV only to points as far as the Canadian Border (an advantage of a travel trailer over a motorhome). We were afraid to take the Escape north of the border in fear we might not be able to get it back!

Natural white noise the best, although good to have the $12 BB&B one too!

Border Crossing

“ Might not be able to get back”. Hmmm usually with us it’s “ rats we have to go back”
Canada: friendly campers, great scenery, Escape Travel Trailers, fune whisky, tasty Canadian beer, ever evolving poutine recipes, and most importantly Hawkins Cheezies.
I like Canada, I even had a good experience when I disobeyed a border crossing sign and got a butt chewing from the border guard.

Duluth

My current campsite is the Duluth marina. That's the Aerial Lift Bridge in the background, and it is lifting to let a ship through. Duluth seems like a nice city.

Hawkins original Cheezies are THE best, by a million miles, no one else is even close.

Lake Fork Campground

Approx 25 miles west of Gunnison, CO.
The reservoir is down 70+% due to the terrible drought in the state. Three towns were swallowed up when the reservoir was constructed. The foundations of one are starting to emerge!

Fall sunset

Enjoying the late evening sunset on Placid Lake for our favorite campsite at Placid Lake State Park, near Seeley Lake MT. Smoke is from a prescribed burn in Idaho.
