Hey Leon, youre camping inside the old Fox Movie Ranch. A couple miles west is a real piece of LA history. Go west a couple miles on Mulholland Dr. to the Paramount Movie Ranch, the last original 1930's era western movie town in LA! Free admission.
http://www.seeing-stars.com/Studios/...untRanch.shtml
Also if you want to see how Hollywood lived in the 30's, take a drive to Lake Malibu and have a look at the old ballroom. Leo Carrillo State Beach is pretty famous too. All the 60's beach movies were filmed there. The remnants of the biggest movie set, Iverson Movie Ranch, and Corriganville and 30 minutes north off the 118 freeway.
PM me if you want a few more tibdits.
Greg

Not a decent picture today. The Home is at Paradise Island (not an island and not paradise) for the week while we take a bluegrass cruise out of Fort Lauderdale. I will post something out the cabin window if I have a connection.

This scene would be outside my front window if I had one. I'm at the Orlando Hamcation, a gathering for amateur radio operators. There must be one hundred RVs here, many festooned with tall antennas like in the photo. Most are big rigs; I saw only one other fiberglass trailer, a Scamp.
Yesterday at around noon I heard a "BOOM!" loud enough to shake my trailer. One of the tall RV antenna masts had contacted an overhead power line. I commented to someone that these antennas were normally black, but this one touching the power line was gray. She witnessed the incident and replied that the antenna was bright red for a couple of seconds. Fortunately no one was hurt.

Thanks for the interesting photo, Mike. Not quite the usual RV crowd, although when someone uses a Class 8 tractor to tow an RV trailer, it often seems to be one of those Volvos.

It seems bizarre that at this sort of event the area under the lines wouldn't be marked off to avoid this sort of problem. Makes one wonder - was that rig where it wasn't supposed to be? This makes brushing an overhanging tree branch with an RV look like a minor problem!

Here's a photo of the offending antenna leaning against the power line. No, areas weren't cordoned off; there are high-tension lines crossing the fairgrounds, and even after this incident I could see a antennas within striking distance of a power line. Some are secured with guy ropes, but not all.

Greg, Thanks for the offer. We only had reservations at Malibu Creek State Park through Friday night. There weren't any sites available for Saturday or Sunday nights. So we headed on up to San Luis Obispo. We are stuck in a KOA here that is undergoing renovation. Will do some laundry, and other chores tomorrow, and then head back out to more state parks on Monday -- probably around San Simeon.

That was us. We saw you when we pulled in, but of course you were on the other side of the road. Crazy busy rest area! Sorry we didn't get a chance to chat

Not every day is a day in paradise.....
Since we couldn't find a public campground with openings over the holiday weekend, and we needed to do laundry plus a few other chores, we decided to stay in the KOA at San Luis Obispo. I thought I had completed a reservation, but when I arrived they had no record of the reservation (probably my fault). They found a spot for us even though the sign at the camp ground entrance said "Campground Full". The units are packed together tighter than I have ever seen. The campground is undergoing renovation, and the washers and dryers are currently sitting outside the laundromat which is getting a new floor. The showers are a "work in progress". But on the bright side we did find a laundromat down the road, and I got several trailer chores done, including installing a new carrier for the sewer hose (the hinge on the end cap broke), make some adjustments to the towing mirrors, and tighten/replace a few screws. We are on to Montana de Oro State Park (thanks Ross!). So the back window views will improve.

Similar to staying in a motel, except BETTER because you get to sleep in your own bed, head on your own pillow and eating food that you like and fix. I think it's just fine!

You'll get that on your bigger jobs. Lakeside spots in the Michigan State Parks on Lake Michigan aren't much different. Away from the lake, much better.

Sorry did encounter that situation somewhere in Oregon at State Campground on coast , left and found better down the road . They kept 14.00 . I was not referring to Leon who doesn't live anywhere near here . I was referring to all the campers who are happy to put up with this experience . Guess that is just me but I can't deal with being packed like a sardine and pay for that experience to boot . Again no disrespect to Leon . I have also been in situations I am not familiar with and just deal because I am scared there is nothing else at the moment .Just remembered left another on the way up and ended up at Camping World for the night . I do live here on this coast , traveled it many times and am not afraid to go on . Pat

It depends why you are where you are at.
This crowded campground is within walking distance, along a scenic path, of downtown Victoria, with the option of a water-taxi.
Been there, done that.
