Why was the Mexico thread closed?

I was very interested in leaning more about travel to Mexico I don't understand why that thread was closed I didn't read any nasty posts or polical comments. I would like to head down to Baja some day not alone maybe a small group. I read some good safety suggestions. Maybe I'm missing something....

That thread was closed as the discussion went south about the crime wave south of the border and several members started member bashing. As long as the topic remains on course about camping trips to Mexico it is fine, just remember to be careful when traveling in unfamiliar places.

Several members have sent p/m questioning the close status of the other thread. By the time the off topic and offending posts were eliminated, there was not much left. Let's try and keep the topic on camping in both south and north of the border on a positive experience.

Hi Jim
Thanks for your attention to appropriateness of thread comments. I never thought about it this way but a thread with negativity about Canada , the north, could go south. After 80 hours below zero were hovering on the plus side now and with the wind down its almost
balmy.

Not questioning anyone. I respect that the moderators have a job to do. I was just confused. I just didn't see the negative posts I understand now they were removed and the thread went too far south.

Thanks for your thoughtful moderating of this forum, Jim.

Habla espanol?
Love Mexico. Went to school in Mexico City. (Years ago.)
Too bad they have the issues they have as it is an interesting country, with mostly good people and inexpensive except for vehicle insurance.
And great coasts.
Maybe Baja?

The best information on Baja is found in Ron's two threads from his trips in 2016 and 2017.

One site that can provide a wealth of real time info is BajaNomad. A lot of the forum members know Baja like the back of their hand. Mostly Americans who either have a place there or do lot's of off road stuff.

We're not going to Baja this year. We're waiting for the paving on Mex 5 to be completed. We've done the rough unpaved 22 miles twice and that's enough. I was thrilled yesterday to see that they are now actually starting to do that. Maybe they'll be finished by next year.

Safe to go??

I have a friend at work, after many trips to Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and Belize bought a property near the Belize Mexico border, in Belize. He bought a couple of acres for $40k.

He insists that the area where he purchased is as safe as any neighborhood any one on this forum lives in. Mexico, just like Chicago and New York has bad areas as well as good.

About 20 years ago, an older guy I worked with was just about up for retirement, he had plans to join a convoy from SoCal to Acapulco, they had plans to stay 3 months at a gated RV resort. He had a RV magazine he showed me. They would take groups of 300 and keep everybody together.

Do you purchase insurance for your trips into Mexico? If 'yes' what company and ball park cost? Thx.

I have friends who lived in Belize for an extended period of time. They said everything was fine as long as you did't mess with the big bags of illicit drugs that washed up onto the beaches from time to time from scuttled drug-running speed boats. The bad guys would eventually come looking for them...

I'll consider it when it is safe to make the trip without feeling the need to join a caravan. Until then I'll just stay here and visit Canada in the summer.

There is no doubt that Canada is a wonderful place to visit in the summer.

In reference to caravans into Mexico, we did join a 7-rig caravan that took us down to Los Barriles, Baja California Sur. The main objective was to learn the ropes, and we now feel very comfortable traveling back to the States without someone holding our hand.

When we finish this adventure, we will have spent 2 months in Baja.

Klem,

Yes, we purchased insurance from Vagabundos.com in California. There were several packages, but the one we signed up for cost around $700.
