Hi,
We did the trip in mid March in 2016. We live 30 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge. We take 2 west from St Ignace, Mi. to Everret, Wa with the exception of the section from Kalispell tMt. to Spokane. We straighten that out a bit by going south and then west..
We drive an all wheel drive Chevy van with all season tires. There are no gates on this route. Bring warm clothes etc. in case you hit bad weather. Buy gas often. Have fun and enjoy the beauty of the snow. We have also used 12, 212, 200, and other non interstae roads, but not quite that early in the year. We have hit snow in April and October while towing our 21. We have not gotten stuck. We do watch people spin into the ditch. Some folks just cannot slow down.

Our most recent snow adventure was last October while passing south of Mt. Hood in Oregon on 26. We did 25 mph with flashers on from the top of the pass down to about 2000 feet. Then it changed to rain. We try to do most of our snow travel in the daylight.

Enjoy you new Escape!!

Hello, fellow Wisconsinite.

We will be doing a similar voyage several weeks earlier to pick up our 5.0 and head to AZ for Feb/Mar. Many excellent suggestions provided by others. We have made the trip in winter twice from Wisconsin to Portland. We had the luxury of watching for a 3 day window storm-free. Once we stopped and enjoyed a winter visit to Yellowstone (amazing experience if you have the time). One thing to be aware of is the possibility of white-outs from blowing snow in the plains. Two hours after we got thru Billlings MT, I94 was closed for over a day because of white-outs. use good judgement if you need to sit it out. Bon voyage.

Both Montana and Wyoming can be bad at any time. We were stopped on the way home from Osoyoos this year with rain/hail and winds that took the wipers off the vehicles....
