Class 3 - as defined by SAE J684 and the very old VESC V-5 standard - simply means a trailer weight capacity over 3500 pounds and up to 5000 pounds.
I'm still trying to follow your statement above. What I said is, that on my Toyota RAV4 V6, the Toyota factory hitch receiver would have been a Class II, which is not suitable for a WDH.
I gather that for WDH one would need a Class III at least. So I had the dealer install a Class III, which is suitable for WDH.
The key to my stipulation to the dealer was that it be suitable for WDH.

The hitch is suitable, but the vehicle might not be. You can bolt a class III to anything.

You were asking what class of hitch a vehicle has, and I was just explaining why that doesn't tell you if it is suitable for WDH or not (which was the subject that the thread had wandered to).

That makes sense.

I emailed Toyota about using a WDH on a 2015 4Runner. I will let you know what they say when they get back to me.

We're pulling our 19 with a
V-6 Highlander with no problem. My Curt hitch has seven bolts tieing it
to the undercarriage of the Highlander. I use the ETI provided standard WDH with the standard stinger. Works good. No sway, no porpoising, tows level. Most important, get your rig set up right, check the bolts regularly, check tires
and pressures regularly, follow the same hookup routine every time, hit the road.

Good luck with that. Took me six years of pestering them and the dealer to get an answer to my question.

RAV4 and WDH -The Answer
Finally, after some six years I got to speak to somebody at Toyota Canada and they explained why Toyota does not recommend a weight distribution hitch.
He said, it is because they do not have a manufacturing partnership with a WDH supplier and so they cannot offer any guarantee or take any responsibility. If they did, the manuals for the RAV and from the hitch maker would contain instructions and information for its set-up and use.
Simple as that. They are not saying you can't use one, just that they can't recommend that you do.

No doubt someone else will get a different answer from them. The above makes sense.

Not, exactly. A true sign of aging is not remembering that you have already said something.

Interesting that my 2008 Tacoma manual says Toyota recommends using a WDH.

(and I too am now repeating myself ....)

And my 2015 Highlander manual says that trailers weighing 5000 lbs or less do not need a WDH. I have always thought that is kind of strange, because it seemed to me that tongue weight would also figure into the equation. But on the other hand, I am not an engineer.

Leon, I often wonder how much of what in the manual actually comes from engineers and how much from lawyers?

I have a hunch that some of it also comes from marketing.
