Yes, it's a 2 x 4 ft sheet of 3/4" plywood. The directions called for a 24" x 48" piece of foam, but I found some "densified batting," which seems like it might last longer. A drawback to the batting was it was in two 22" squares, which I cut to 22" x 20", using the remnants to fill the gap between the two larger pieces. The mattress does indeed slide up under the padded part, so it doesn't hang off the end of the platform (at least not by more than a smidge).

The board is bolted to the platform with L-braces and lock nuts. (We used wood screws on the vertical/back of the board.) It was interesting to get down under the platform to do the bolting (and even more interesting to get back out!) The directions called for 10" braces and we used 6" - which was a mistake and we may re-do it at some point - and we positioned it so that it doesn't actually touch the wall (which is why we might put a ledge/shelf across the top of it).

The board is covered with a yard of upholstery "velvet" that goes with my mom's coverlet quilt. The quilt works well enough with our dinette (and valence) fabric, but in close proximity they don't really compliment each other; so I went looking for upholstery fabric that would work well with both - and I found it, on sale (!) for $5/yard. (Happy dance.)

This whole arrangement was what attracted us to the front window in the 21; and I'm not disappointed with how it turned out.

We have a couple of clear soap containers from BBB on the walls for glasses. A container can be attached to the bottom side of cabinets.

Thanks, Cathy! We are looking for some little something like you describe for glasses, wristwatches and etc. With the captain's lights mounted on the cabinets, it's hard to figure out what will work best. I'll have to give BBB a look. Clear sounds good!

Thanks Mary F for the PM tips turned out to be easier to do than I thought. Used 2 22X22" foam from Home Depot, trimmed it down to mattress height then used trimmed material to fill 3-4" gap.

One of the 21s we looked at before our build sheet was due had the headboard modification, and I don't take credit for the idea or how to accomplish it. Using purple velvet was all mine, however.

Glad you like it and I wonder if the OP wishes this whole tangent was split off into its own thread, so their storage ideas could be addressed!
