That's one of the great things about life. We analyze, get angry, and stew over all the things that have gone wrong, but in the end those are sometimes the very things that give us the biggest laughs years down the road.

A funny update ... Went down to DMV today, armed with receipts for payment of my fees/sales tax (previous obtained through CA DMV), my already issued temporary CA permit and the Customs Declaration from the Sumas border crossing. After waiting nearly an hour in line, I approached the oh-so-bored clerk. After explaining that I was trying to verify the VIN number on the trailer without having to actually bring it down to the DMV, I was greeted with a steely-eyed stare and the words, "We need to see the trailer."
"So," I ventured, "even though the United States Officials at the border (aka. Homeland Security) have seen the trailer, verified the VIN number is correct and stamped the paperwork, the State of California does not accept their word?" More intense staring and another "We need to see the trailer". Mustering my most cheerful voice I offered, "Well, I guess U.S. Government officials probably aren't as trustworthy as California officials. ..." (Considering the look I got, I'm surprised he didn't have me arrested.) Needless to say, no license plates until we drive the trailer down to the DMV so some other bored person can walk out, look at the VIN number and put his/her own stamp on the paperwork. Ahhh, bureaucracy at its finest.

Exactly! Besides, look at all the experience we'll get, driving our trailer through traffic.

I hate dealing with nonsensical bureaucratic BS, especially when common sense is thrown out the door. We may not have the hassles of trailer registration like you do in the US, but we have our fair share in other places. I deal with City Hall on a regular basis, where they just do not seem to care about peoples time, or money, at all.

We went to our Virginia DMV with all the Escape paperwork Kim sent us. After reading all the pain others have experienced plus my own pain with our DMV I was expecting to at least have to make a second trip to DMV.
We were met with a very friendly staff and even though it took 45 minutes to get through the paper and exchange rates we walked out with a permanent tag for our trip in two weeks to pick up our Escape.
The real surprise was we were taxed only on the base cost of the trailer.

We finally went across Houston into downtown yesterday morning to have someone look at our VIN. Same as in California, all that paperwork and still had to take it to the impound lot in a beautiful part of Houston, not.
Oh and did I mention they are open on Mondays from 9 am to 9:30 am? 30 minutes once a week.
We were first in line and it was fast. Hopefully today we should get the real tags-we haven't even had a temp tag. Drove all the way from Canada to Texas with no tags. didn't get stopped. I believe they thought we were from Canada with the big red leaf on the back, so everyone just waved!

I checked with North Carolina. They will not offer me a tag until I have brought it through customs. I've got all my current paperwork to carry with me. Like others on this forum, I'm hoping law enforcement sees the Canadian maple leaf on the spare tire and "assumes" the Canadians must not need a tag!!!

I am continually amazed at how much bureaucratic nonsense that so many people have to go through to register a simple travel trailer. Although our system has its own flaws, the process itself is quite painless here, usually only taking a few minutes to go through. The registration for my Escape is also perpetually renewed at no cost, and will challenge the Escape itself for its lifespan.

All of this hassle is because we imported the trailer. Our Casita was no big deal. They handed us our plates when we picked up.
It was still worth the hassle getting the Escape, love the 21ft!
I also did have one of those build a signs made for our Casita, says Made In Texas.
