No 12V

ETI says they cannot install an after market 12V drop for me. Is there another way to do this?

What's an "aftermarket" 12 volt drop?

I was going to ask the same thing.

Escape will install 12V wiring in any cabinet you specify, but they don't install the accessory you run from the drop (assuming you meant aftermarket 12V plug and not 12v drop). It's a simple matter of using a 12V plug with 2 wires coming off of it. They're available at any Radio Shack. Black to black, red to red. Done. If you're completely uncomfortable about making the connections, I should think a neighbor or friend could do it for you in 5 minutes.

Maybe this crude drawing I did on a thread about the wilson sleek will help you visualize what I'm saying:

The cell phone power I used was a cigarette lighter socket spliced to the 12V wiring drop ETI installed. I got one with a mounting bracket so I could fasten the socket to the framing inside the cabinet and have nothing show on the outside of the cabinet.

Drop?

I asked for a 12V drop in the cabinet. Is that the wrong thing to ask for? Should I have just asked for a plug in the cabinet?

You need a power source - that's the "drop" in the cabinet. Escape installs those routinely. What we're talking about is the thing you connect to the drop. The signal boosters use a 12V plug. The plug comes with the booster. Get a 12V socket (cigarette lighter type). Get one with the wires coming off the back of it. Those wires connect to the 12V drop you had Escape install in the cabinet. Easy.

ETI says "no"

I bought the model so ETI said they will not install a 12V drop. It would be an aftermarket item and I am willing to pay the extra$ but they said no??

To try and clarify further:

The booster comes with a 12V plug.
That plug must connect to a socket.
Get a socket, and connect it to the drop.
Here's a link for a suitable socket on ETrailer. Even has a mounting bracket for inside the cabinet.

Escape installs 12V drops as an option. It's just wiring - not an aftermarket item. I had them install drops in several places. What they won't do, is install an accessory (in this case a cell phone booster) to any drops they install.

If someone told you they don't install 12V drops, they don't know what they're talking about. I doubt that's what they said.

Response ...

Hello Laura,

Please note I have just confirmed with Reace and we cannot install a 12V drop aftermarket. – Please disregard my price quote of $50 and location request.

Please feel free to forward any questions you may have.

Warm regards,

I believe this means that Laura bought the trailer after it was was already complete (and had been used as a display model), so it is too late to have the extra wiring added while the trailer was built. ETI is saying that they cannot add the wiring drop to an already-completed trailer.

It appears that the issue is not just installing a socket or otherwise providing a way to connect the booster unit; it is getting wires carrying power (a "drop") into the cabinet.

Ok, now I get it. I thought you were having a trailer built. My apologies for the confusion.

In any case, it's pretty easy to install a drop in one of the overhead cabinets over the dinette in an Escape 21. The wiring just runs from the power distribution panel to the cabinet -- and you can route it under the corner trim up the wall.

well..

I guess I will have to have it done later. Would it be a good idea to also have the antenna installed at the same time and not by ETI?

How much does ETI charge for a 12 volt drop? Also, I seem to recall someone said the basic 12 volt drop will be a smaller gauge wire than what is used by ETI to install s 12 volt interior outlet. Does anyone know the wire size used for a 12 volt interior outlet, a 12 volt drop, and for a 12 volt captain's light?

The antenna is easy -- just a hole and some sealant. I'd probably do the whole thing at once. Less hassle.

What threw me off was the word "aftermarket". I assumed that meant aftermarket parts, not the trailer.

Any fiberglass boat repair facility could install the antenna and run the 12V feeds.

On the 21 if the antenna will be on the driver side I would pick up the 12V off the converter and run it up the rear driver side corner. You can pull the pad away from the corner enough to tuck it behind the pad.

For a passenger side install I would pick up the 12V and ground from the battery or any 12V device under the bench and use the same routing up the passenger side rear corner.
