cut corner mattress in 21?

Curious as to how necessary is the cut corner on that mattress? Would you be bumping it in passing if full size? I am of course wondering if replacing with a standard full mattress is possible, and if so how much would be unsupported at that corner, or if any replacement would have to be customized to fit?

If you are replacing the box spring mattress that comes with the Escape with a foam mattress, then cutting the corner is easy with an electric knife.

But you should try the Escape mattress before replacing - we added a 4" memory foam topper and find it very comfortable.

ps. the Escape 21 mattress is a full XL - a full size mattress would not need cutting as it would be 5" shorter than the full XL.

When we ordered the trailer, we got it without the bed as it wasn't acceptable to me. Dirk can sleep on anything; I can't. I love my Select Comfort/Sleep by Number bed and wanted the same in the trailer. However, the full size bed fits width-wise but not length-wise as it's shorter than a queen. The bed in the 21 is full width but queen length.

I don't have any photos of exactly how it's set up at the top, so you get to imagine it until I can take some photos. The mattress fits along the bottom of the frame and at the head I put a thick block of foam (part of a big sheet I had from JoAnn's). The foam goes under the area where my pillow is to keep it from falling down. On the window side is where the pump for the bed goes and my sound machine (white noise device) and travel alarm clock goes on top of it. On the bathroom side I have a plastic container that hold stuff like cough drops, ear plugs (for when Dirk's with me snoring away on the dinette bed), etc.

Yes, the mattress does stick over the end. It seemed that everyone visiting would sit on the corner of the bed and just about fall off, so we added some plywood to the end to keep that corner propped up. It goes across the entire end of the bed. Dirk also added some L brackets (closer to the window side) to keep the mattress from sliding down while in transit. The plywood has really helped and with the brackets on the side nobody feels them when they sit on the edge of the bed.

I've had various folks tour the trailer at rallies and not one single person has commented about the closeness between the mattress corner and the kitchen cabinet (compared to usual). Yes, it is close but there's still plenty of room to get by. I'm used to it and since I've never used the regular bed I can't compare the two. Even folks with a 21 didn't say anything about the bed (as in, hey I have more room since I have the regular bed).

I just make sure the sheet and blankets are tucked under at the corner so I don't trip over them when walking by. The attached photo shows you how much room there is to walk by. Granted, I don't have all the blankets I normally put on there (esp when camping in cooler weather), but this should help. (It was also taken before we put plywood on the frame.)

NW Cat Owner, that photo shows clearly the space involved. Thanks so much.

ETI put us in contact with their mattress supplier in Canada; we had them build the most firm model they made to the ETI cut-corner dimensions. Works well, although wifey did put an eggshell topper on it. Think it was maybe $400 USD.

We went to a local mattress company and they made a custom mattress to match the ETI mattress. The up charge was $100 or so. Keep in mind that the ETI mattress has the mitered corner, a radius corner, and two right angle corners.

I don't have an Escape yet but what do you folks do for bed sheets?

Which one? Our 19 is a standard Queen, so sheets aren't an issue. Even with the cut off corner in the 21, you can just tuck the excess. Sheets are available online in many sizes, including custom non-standard sizes if needed.

I hope to soon be an owner of a 21. So I was wondering about the odd size XL full-size with a mitered corner, radiused corner, and two 90s. I've never seen an XL full-size sheet set.

In our 21, we use queen sheets with elastic all the way around the fitted sheet. Works very well.

I’ve always used Full sheets ( for the last 3 years) not knowing that it’s supposed to be Full XL. Never noticed a size issue. And we have a 2” memory foam topper on our bed too!
