E-Day is Nearly Here

After placing our order for a new Escape 19 last September, E-Day (Escape pick-up Day) is nearly here. My wife and I are traveling to Chilliwack to pick-up our new Escape on April 19. It has been a long wait and it seems that as the pick-up day approaches, each day is much longer than the previous one. We have been getting pictorial updates from the folks at Escape on a weekly basis for the past few weeks, and that has only increased our anticipation.

Thanks to Dave Macrae for showing us his 19 last September, and to all of the very knowledgeable folks on this forum whose contributions and experience have helped us to design our own Escape. Our final build list looks something like this:

' - 2 rear face mount speakers (owner supplied)
' - 2 front under cabinet mount speakers
' - On/off power switch
' - Interior am/fm antenna (within trailer wall)
- TV antenna with power amplifier (Includes TV Ready)
- Wall mount extendable TV arm (For 15" - 19" TVs)

Structure
- Cabinet door at end of front passenger bench
- Extra insulation & thermal windows

- Spray foam insulation on underside (without heat strips on tanks)
- Additional counter extension in bed on passenger side
- Exterior access hatch on front drivers side
- Front storage box

Decor and Misc. Options

I know that pictorial evidence is a must in cases like this, so I will post pictures of the finished product after we pick it up.

Again thanks to all of you for your help.

regards
dave

Sounds great, Dave. Lots of fun ahead now.

Could could have made it way easier, and just listed what the trailer does not have, it seems you have it pretty much fully outfitted.

Pretty much a copy and paste from the full order sheet, with a few nice personal touches

Thanks all for the well wishes.

It was tough deciding what options to choose, and being the weak willed person that I am, there were few options that I said no to.

To Reace's and Tammy's credit, they provided some great advice as to what they thought would be worthwhile additions, and I did follow their advice for some key items (such as deleting the heat strips on the tanks but keeping the extra insulation).

We did luck out on the fabric choice. Went to several stores in the city looking for something we liked. After not finding anything and almost deciding we were going to go with the standard factory fabric, my wife remembered a bolt of fabric that she had bought years ago to redo a couch but had never used. After digging it out of the basement (all kinds of treasures hidden away down there), we both agreed that we liked it better than the factory fabric and decided to send it to Escape for use on our trailer. So I used the money I saved on buying new fabric to buy new aluminum wheels for the 19.

Not really looking forward to the drive as it is really long and you never know what kind of weather you will get through the mountains in April. I think it is about 1100 km each way. Will take one day to drive out and two on the way home. Will get a chance to camp out for one night near Kamloops and one night in Jasper on the way home.

Just got back from picking up our new 19' on the weekend. Was a very long trip, about 2400 km total. The trailer was everything we expected. People at Escape were great. Special thanks to Dave for the super orientation and to Dennis for his help installing the wireless break controller and setting up the WD hitch.

The FJ performed quite well and appears to be well suited for towing the 19'. Of course the gas mileage was awful, about 24 IMPG on way to Chilliwack and about 15 IMPG on return trip, but that was expected and there was a lot of high mountain passes to go through both ways. On way home we stayed at Paul Lake Prov Park near Kamloops on first night (we were the only people in the park), and we stayed the second night at Wapiti campground in Jasper. Rained most of the way home, and got some unexpectedly cold weather (-10° C) in Jasper. In hindsight we should have asked the Escape crew to not fill the freshwater tank prior to us leaving, as we ended up having the black tank valve freeze up in Jasper, so we could not dump prior to leaving town. It was thawed out when we got back home so we were able to dump it then. We ended up draining and winterizing the trailer on Sunday since it was supposed to get cold again that night.

Also had a few problems with the Tekonsha Prodigy wireless brake controller, but will save that discussion for a bit later.

cheers
dave

Following are a few pictures we took of the trailer/tug and interior.

Dave,
I have the same Jensen radio in my 19', I really like it, it is my second one I've installed in past 3 years. What is the switch for? Turn off the power to radio?

I actually became aware of this radio through your posts, Jim, so thank-you for that. This is the bluetooth version of the JHD910 (i.e. the JHD910BT) which allows you to broadcast from the radio via bluetooth to either a set of wireless headphones or to a bluetooth speaker. The switch is to turn off the 12V power to the radio.

Thanks, what's that idiom "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." I had trouble finding the bluetooth version, so I opted for the older version. Glad to have helped. I just unplug mine from it's 12v source. What happened to my Andersen Hitch thread? You went with the conventional w/d set up.
I take it you did not get the underneath foam spray for your tanks?

Beautiful interior. I stuck with the stock upholstery because I really did like it. But now I like yours better...woe is me.

A very nice rig!

The conventional WD supplied by Escape looked fine to me and the price was good, and it is a proven design. It seemed to perform well on the trip home and I have no issues with it.

Our night at Jasper got a bit chilly. My guess was -10°C but it could have been a bit lower, maybe -12°C. We did get the spray foam on the underside of the 19. However, the foam does not cover the drain valves for the black and grey tank. We had some ice form in the black tank valve itself, such that the valve could not be opened. After a few degrees of temperature increase and about 400 km more driving, the valve had thawed on its own and I was able to drain the tank.

Thank you Karen.

We did have several couples get toured through our 19 as we were going through our own orientation. One couple from New Hampshire liked our fabric and wanted to know where we had purchased it. We were a bit apologetic and told them that we do not know where it is from or even if it is still available. My wife had purchased a roll of that fabric about 10 yrs ago to redo a couch. We ended up getting rid of the couch and the roll of fabric sat in our basement for years until we decided to use it on our Escape.

Don't know if you had hook-ups but people have been known to use a hair dryer on the valves. Then again maybe you didn't have a hair dryer.

I was thinking before about you having that fabric around. I spent hours looking at fabric only to find that the ones we liked best were "earth-friendly" which means they were $150 per yard. I do have very old fabric in the attic though...

Enjoy your Escape!
