I told my husband about the solar and he wanted to know how much sunlight you'd had during your trip. I think other people have said that the solar worked well even in cloudy weather --

If you are familiar with the campsites at Green Point Campground in Pacific Rim National Park, you will know that this area is in a rain forest and most of the campsites are in shade and a few of them get no sunlight at all and are very dark. Our campsite was adjacent to the beach and did get some but not a lot of direct sunshine during the day. At several other locations we also stayed where the tree cover was very thick, and where we had shade (without direct sunlight) for most of the day. During out three weeks away, most days were fairly sunny and we found that the brief periods of direct sunlight combined with indirect light was always sufficient so that our batteries appeared to be fully charged each day by the solar panel. We never had any instances where the battery monitor suggested the batteries were significantly run down.

That was me. While it works well enough through the cover to keep the batteries up, it only put out about .2 amps - not enough for camping. I have found that the panel does charge at a couple of amps in partial shade, however under heavy shade you will be lucky to get an amp.

We were staying in a mostly-open-shade camp site a few weeks ago. The weather was a mix of sun and cloud, but it was usually fairly bright.

But, it was very hot during the day (cooler at night). I tried leaving the windows open and the fan on automatic 24 hours a day. At times during the day the fan was running pretty hard. It usually stopped by 11pm or so. The fan was enough of a draw that the battery never fully charged. Towards the end of the week the battery was getting critically low, so we stopped running the fan.

Next time we'll try being more careful about when we run the fan.

Doug, how well does the 19 tow with Frontier, both highway and mountains? What kind of mpg are you getting?
Thanks,

I don't have a lot of experience to compare it with. This is our first "real" trailer and our first "real" truck. Before this we were towing a light tent trailer (with no brakes) with a 4 cylinder RAV 4.

With that disclaimer out of the way, I'd say the Frontier tows the 19 quite nicely. Yeah, you know it's back there. Your acceleration takes a definite hit, and you do need to leave a bit more braking room; but not too much for either. The ride is reasonably comfortable, and everything feels solid.

Good to know, I have a Frontier and am considering the 19 or the 5.0, really don't want to upgrade the truck. Mine is a 2011, 19k miles, the cost to change trucks is tremendous.

Thanks, Doug

I'm sitting here FREEZING on the south Oregon coast. I would rank my furnace as the best option, right after my warm bed. Should have stayed home in BC.

Don, we had rain overnight two nights ago, and at 7AM when I went to start my truck, there was a skim of ice on the windshield. Right in the middle of summer.

But just think how cold it would have gotten if there had not been global warming.

our 19 will be built soon. With 6.2 frig, micro goes under stove burners [ we did not want oven]
Hoping Reace can move the 2 drawers which normally go in that space, to the left towards sink. This sacrifices storage space there, but I put couple drawers as priority. Ask me end of Oct after we've gotten ours & I've put all 'stuff' in and I cann let yoouu know how I like it!

We go to FL for month March. Fresh fruit & veg. Pick strawberries for cheap. Want 6.2, which is actually smaller than a not large refrig we had in 5th wheel we just sold. Downsizing.... but like refrig space for food I prepare at home & put in freezer for later. Who wants to go to groc every 3-4 days when camped in idyllic spot.

Don't have the measurements off hand, but we got 2 1L cartons of ice-cream, a couple pork chops and a bag of ice cubes into ours. Maybe someone else is close to theirs and can give dimensions.
