Hi: grape_escape... Most of the "Pro's" are partial to 5.0TA's. The "Cons" don't really care what they take!!! Alf

Glad this thread popped up- lots of good info for us 5th wheel newbies! We have never owned or towed one but my research has led us to the 5th wheel option and the Escape brand, and this thread has been very helpful.

We have decided on the 5th wheel option for three main reasons:

1. Stability/ ease of towing

2. Shorter overall length than a bumper pull, given the same size trailer.

3. A dedicated queen bed- mandatory, according to my better half!

Regarding #2, I've attached a couple of photos of our driveway situation. We previously owned a 2003 Tahoe and a 24 ft. HiLo bumper pull trailer with a total combined length of 40.5 ft. and were just able to back in the trailer by pulling as far forward as we could into the concrete drive adjacent to the garage, then backing up into the spot occupied by the little white car.

We intend to purchase a newer Ford F150 4x4 SuperCrew w/6.5 ft. bed which would put us at approx. 41.5 ft. if my information is correct. With the bed overhang of the 5th wheel, this should make the total length about 3 ft. shorter than our previous rig, I'm guessing. The one factor I'm not sure of is the manueverabilty of the Ford vs. the Tahoe (which has an excellent turning radius). To pull out, we have to make that tight turn.

Any input would be appreciated!

Good thing your on gravel for that tight turn so the wheels can slip a bit. On pavement that would really stress the sidewalls. Good luck with your trailer!

Why not park it on the upper driveway, back down and then disconnect and leave it there until next time. I assume those driveway lights are yours thus your property.

Eggscape, indeed the gravels slips (so much so that we recently took the gravel out and converted the sloped section to roadbase). It is much less slippier than it used to be.

Jim, are you saying to back down and park on the concrete pad in front of the garage, or on the sloped portion? The upper portion where the solar lights are is the access to the street.

No can do as that would block driveway access. Backing down and parking on the concrete could be an option, though, I suppose. Ideally, I'd like to get it where the white car is. Guess I won't know for sure until I try it!

🤔 If you go with the Super Cab you would save another foot in overall length and in wheel base giving you a tighter turning radius. Probably have a higher payload also. The overall length of my 5.0TA/F150 is 36’.

6.5 foot, I can get the trailer at 90 degrees to cab with out hitting and I have quite a bit of useable storage in truck bed.

This is Reace's truck, with the first 5.0TA out of the mold. How much further do you need to go?

Thanks, Chotch! That confirms my calculations that I made in a different thread about the overall length. The SuperCrew and 6.5 ft.bed combo would put the overall length at 37 ft, or 3-4 feet less than my previous rig. I would actually prefer the smaller cab but my better half wants to go big, so . . .

Wow, and he has the short bed, correct? I wonder what hitch he uses?

You don't, he's using the 5.5" and it works, I believe.
