step on F150

Hi Jim,

We have a '14 F150 Lariat (Supercab) for our 5.0TA. A little over 1,000 miles on the TA since pickup on 9/8 and 5,300 miles since leaving NH for pickup at ETI. In Cloverdale CA in a nice park, Dutcher Creek, and this is our first use for the A/C. 95 degrees. Yesterday in Fort Bragg CA it got up to 66 degrees.
Anyway, I put on a Trek fold down step I found on Amazon that I love. Easy to use and folds up out of the way. I don't thing you will miss the Ford tailgate step.

Yeah, won't have to worry about overloading like a few pickups do.

I like the 66° much better than the 95° stuff. Thanks for the endorsement on the Bestop TrekStep. It is one of the few I am considering.

One other one I can across is The SlideStep. It is a bit more under the truck, but you don't get the benefit of using the box side as a grab bar.

Jim. Congratulations on getting the new truck. There is just no substitute for having extra cargo and towing capacity in reserve. My GMC knew there was something behind it on the 6 and 8 % grades. As for the price of the new pickups these days, I sure know what my old grandfather would have said in his broken English. "To much coins". Loren

LOL... Even getting a good deal, it still cost a lot. I have to agree with your grandfather.

Is the payload rating you've quoted off the door sticker?

I am asking this as I would be amazed that your truck carried a full 2000+ lb payload particularly with the Lariat model which is a relatively heavily optioned truck, the aluminum body notwithstanding.

My 2012 has barely a 1200 lb payload, as the door sticker indicates.

Yeppers Jim, I just picked it up an hour ago.

No, I got it from the manual. Mine is on the top rating in the bottom right box. It is a 157" wheelbase 4x4, with a 7,050 GVWR, thus the 2,010 Payload Capacity.

I'd still verify with the door jamb, it maybe more specific to your truck's options

I agree. My F150 is #1830 in the book & online but the door sticker is #1537 because of the options.

I agree - since the manual provides a single value for each combination of GVWR, cab, and wheelbase, it must be for base equipment. Higher trim levels will have substantially less payload left after adding up the optional equipment.

Even better, run over a scale and subtract that from the GVWR for a real payload... which will probably still be quite suitable.

All it shows the is the GVWR, and the GAWR of both axles, for weight ratings. Am I missing something. I would like to confirm the payload rating, as it makes sense it can differ with options, but I really don't have much heavy stuff added on.

Here is a photo of the VIN sticker.

Maybe only passenger vehicles are required to show the payload. Anyway, the sticker gives the one number you need to combine with a scale reading: just subtract the scale weight from the GVWR to get payload.

The table in the manual implies the curb weight that the payload is based on: just subtract payload from GVWR to get the (base equipment) expected curb weight.

I just weighed my rig when I got done adding goodies and subtracted from the GVWR.

This is correct. Our published payload was 1960 lbs. Weighing the truck and subtracting from GVWR gave us a result of 2005 lbs.

I guess I would want to weigh it before I put much of anything in, or on, the truck. Other than driving a 250 km on it last night, it has a full tank of gas, which I assume is payload.

How would options add up to #00 lbs? Most of my options are decorative. The 20" tires, up from the 18" stock would be about the only big thing, and that can't be 100 lbs total.
