If we didn't want to take the boats, I definitely would have bought the 5.0. In my opinion, 5th wheels are easier and safer to tow. I also I think that the 5.0 is a lot better looking than the 19. It is only 4" narrower but it looks a lot sleeker and has better lines than the 19 which is a bit boxy in appearance.
I'm with you Harold, if I'm gonna be near water, I want my boats. However, I take them with me AND my 5.0. Below is a picture of our camp at Bear Creek Lake State Park. We have 2 ten foot long Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100's on top of the truck. Great for Lakes and mild whitewater and the ocean surf.
Sometimes when we are going to paddle for a while, say to explore a lake or slow river, my wife gets a little tired and doesn't like to paddle. So, we have a new Native Craft Ultimate 14.5 Tandem, which we just christened today on the Little River. Kind of a hybrid between a kayak and canoe. Extremely stable, and converts to a solo if desired....worked very well. But, how to carry it on my truck with the 5.0. Enter the "Goalpost" boat rack by Thule. I had to install a front mounted trailer hitch for a couple hundred bucks, but I can use it for other things too. Now granted, I can't take both the Tarpon 100's and the tandem.....forced to make a decision before I leave for my trip....but I'm thinking : - )
One thing I love about the 5.0 is that when we are at a Lake with a great view out the back (where the dinette is ... that we never sit at unless it's bad weather...like Jim, we live outside when we camp), we can lay in our bed, since you are elevated, and watch the view out the back of the trailer. But during the inclement weather, we can also sit at our dinette and enjoy the view. Jim is right, the 4" extra seems like a lot more...I think because the inside of the 19 is so much shorter (about 17 ft as opposed to the 20 ft inside the 5.0) it makes the space seem much wider. I got that feeling when we saw Ian and Jennys 19. Visual thing I suppose. But, if Rease made the 5.0 that extra 4" wider, I might just be tempted to bite!

Re: Which Trailer Did You choose and Why? 5.0 or the 19Ft Trailer?

Thank you all so much for your insightful comments.
The different responses were exactly what I was looking for.

Hokie Escape & JeffZ, Thanks for including the comments on the length of the rigs and also the measurents. I was curious about this, since you have the Frontier and the 5.0. I had forgotten to ask this.

As mentioned in previous posts, I don't think anyone can go wrong with either/any Escape.

Thanks again for the real world comments from all of your experiences.

Best Regards,

TurtleBax

Enter the "Goalpost" boat rack by Thule.

Just a note to anybody planning to mount a canoe or kayak with a bar on the pickup roof and on a canopy or bed mounted rack.

The bed of the truck twists and not always in the same direction of the cab. That can be hard on a canoe. This Thule rack eliminates that issue.

I'd not thought of that Glen....but it's true.
Here's a view of the problem, the nose of the 5.0 (when it turns) wants to "whack" the tail of the boat. With the longer boat centered, it's not a much problem as the Tarpon 100's that extend to either side.
PS: before Jim asks, "why isn't the front tied down?"...It's because I was just showing how it sits on the truck and goalpost. Normally, there would be a strap around the nose of the boat too, not just the anterior tie down (blue rope).

Re: Which Trailer Did You choose and Why? 5.0 or the 19Ft Trailer?

I've posted this before, but here it goes again.

A lot of people have no clue how to tie down a canoe. They tie a painter to the bow and to the stern and tie that to an anchor point on the vehicle.

What they end up with is like this: \----\

The stern is tied to the rear bumper and the bow is tied to the front bumper. Slam on the brakes and it looks like this: /------/ &^%%$# having traveled the length of the slack in the ropes.

They need to tie to a thwart, inside the canoe, not to the ends, like this: /-----\ so that the canoe can't travel forward or backward. The Thule goal post deals with all of that.

And, a bonus:

When paddling solo in a canoe, into the wind, move your weight forward, or turn around in your seat so that most of the canoe is behind you. Now you will have a sail behind you to help with tracking, instead of in front of you, driving you off course. You want the bow lower than the stern.

We love our 13'. Are able to take all we need for the two of us. Love the ability to push by hand when needed, and of course the 20mpg isn't bad, either.

We are back from Thunder Bay Ontario,
a lot of miles both on and off the pavement.
Trailer handled great.
Two problems
1) heat 27 / 28 C each day, boondock camping no power, lots of beer/wine and the lake for cooling down
2) Biting black flies
beer fixed that too ;-)

Beer, wine and a lake. I see no problem with that at all, Geo.
