Around the lakes, Denison, Texas

Huge Lake Texoma is near us. It has many Army Corps and other campgrounds, and marinas.

There were recently ten or more big blue herons lined up along a long stretch of the lake, some distance from each other. Never seen that before.

Even closer to us, however, is a little gem of a lake in town that I frequent. I see something different every time.

I will post some photos that I took recently, but the iPad allows only one per post, so I will make a bunch of posts.

The path around is about a mile and a half with much of it in the woods, but not this side.

One of several American coots who seem to be permanent residents of Waterloo Lake.

And more wildflowers! Which Texas is known for. I belong to the Ladybird Wildflower Center in Austin.

One of four domestic Roman geese who reside at the lake. The mallard "belongs" to two of them.

This is a cormorant and there have been dozens at the lake. Sometimes they are up in the trees. Tree ducks!

This is a duck who is new and I don't know what it is. Maybe someone knows.

And maybe somebody knows what kind of wildflowers those are.

Waterloo Lake

We also are near Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge and are members there, so have been many times. We have seen thousands of birds there. I will post some photos some time from Hagerman.

I don't have a clue - female ducks are usually not very distinctive. Often the best way to identify them is by looking at their mates.

There was no mate that I saw. It was around the Roman geese and there were some mallards but it appeared to be mostly by itself. I will see what it is doing another time if I see it again. I thought that maybe it was a young mallard but it does not look that young and it does not look like a mallard. Also a couple of Canada geese nearby. But I expect that you Canadians could recognize your own.

That does look a lot like it. I will see if there is a mate next time.
