Baby boomers hitting the road
The Star Tribune had an article about how many Baby Boomers are buying RVs so they can see the country. It doesn't mention Escape, but I found it interesting. It also seemed to be an accurate reflection of many go the people we have met in our travels.

Got to say we're guilty of the last line in the story.

That's what I said at 5am Tuesday morning during a ferocious thunderstorm while camped at Spruce Woods Prov. Park in MB. Between the thunder, rain, and good sized branch coming down on the trailer it was not pleasant. Here is what it looked like outside the door in the morning.

I love the feeling of being secure in a thunderstorm, whether cozied up in a tent, or hidden away in my trailer. The sound that rain makes on tent fabric I find very soothing, and not near as noisy as on the fibreglass trailer body, but both sound kinda cool.
I have spent many hours in a tent while it is storming out, either reading, napping, playing cards, or whatever. The advantage a trailer has is that you can hang out under the awning, unless there is a lot of wind, which we fortunately don't see much of around here when raining.

Adrian, good to see you had your awning stowed. Falling rain. Falling leaves, both good, falling wood, not so much.

Here we are at Sandy Riverfront RV in Troutdale just outside portland, having spent four days at Nehalem Bay State Park. This is the first time I've felt trapped in the 17b by the weather. Only it's not the rain it is the 100+ weather. We want to go check out Portlandia.
We are trapped in the hot sun on a no shade site between a parking lot of RV busses.
Waiting for things to cool off so we can go check out the shops at Troudale.

I'm sitting in the front yard, under a huge cedar. Temperature falling between comfortable and tolerable. Just another reason to retire and travel in the shoulder seasons.
Only problem is the beer fridge is in the back yard.

I'll have to figure out where the term "shoulder season" comes from and exactly what it means. I'm guessing it means the season when camping is still good or at least ok and when most kids are in school (although with weird school schedules that may change). I guess I can google it but I get tired of using Google.
When we were at Juniper Beach provincial CG a few weeks ago a retired guy was telling me he could camp for free there in April (I think he said). No services but free, I noted all that for when I retire maybe next year. For now we are traveling at the height of the season with everybody else.
I like reading the baby boomer RV article. We are right on trend

103 degrees right now in Portland. National Weather Service is out at the Portland Airport... right by the mighty Columbia River. Based on that.. I'm sure it's several degrees warmer in the interior.

Shoulder Season is weather related, not school related.
Right after the worst of the winter has passed and the warm up of the summer hasn't started. True the other way, Summer heat is drawing down and winter has't started. Maybe a couple of days down close to freezing though. Some think of shoulder season as being Early Spring/Late Fall.

Shoulder season for me is when people who aren't tall enough to reach my shoulder are back in school. And, I'm not exactly tall.

Where I live there is about 8 months of 'shoulder season'.

Near Miss Manitoba Tornado?
Adrian, sounds like you had a near miss incident with the rare event of a tornado in Manitoba. Wonder how Escape would fare in the path of a tornado. Hope we never experience. Glad you are ok.

Jim you may have heard there was a tornado about an hour and a half southwest of us that night. We did survive a tornado near Kenora ON in 1987. A six year old boy was killed in a tent on which a tree came down that night only about 20 km from us.
I note on your profile you are a locomotive engineer. Which rwy? My first career was with the CPR.

Dave we were only there two nights, never even deployed the awning as it was threatening the first afternoon and we got a storm that night too, When we looked at the forecast a few days before when we booked the site, it called for hot and sunny and no chance of rain. Of course that forecast changed.
