BC Parks License Plates

BC Parks licence plates

Which links in part to this explanation.
Quote:
The new speciality plates are part of the BC Parks Future Strategy, announced by Premier Christy Clark on Nov. 28, 2016. Within the strategy the Province is investing $22.9 million to build 1,900 new campsites, is seeding a new BC Parks Foundation with a $5-million endowment, and will be allocating funding in 2017 for other recreation and conservation initiatives, including hiring more park rangers.

Not a bad way for the locals to support our provincial park system I'd say. Kind of a head scratcher that the plates aren't available for trailers though.

Discussion point::
I know Oregon puts lotto money in their parks, what does your area do?

Reminds me of the Expo plates they issued.
A photograph, faded out so the numbers show up, with decals and stuff stuck on top. Couldn't figure out what it represented. These look to be the same "design". Note the decals are not in place.

Unfortunately in Washington, majority funding of our State Parks shifted from the General Fund that allowed predictable revenue, to fee based system of Discover passes, camping fees and day use fees over the last 8 years. As a result over all funding has dropped ~$24M since 2009.

State Parks Funding | Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission

Part of the root cause (in my opinion) is that Washington State gets most of its revenue from sales taxes. There is not an income tax. As a result our revenues are more sensitive to economic fluctuations such at the 2008 recession. In a effort to plug the budget holes "without raising taxes" user fees were applied to lots of areas including the parks. I wish our parks had a dedicated funding model. The contrast in park operations quality to our neighbors both south and north is obvious.

There are some Washingtonians, including me, who find some of the amenities provided in state parks a bit over the top...might as well be in a commercial RV park what with the lack of privacy and all the perks.

Just an old camper's opinion...

I think it is the upkeep that suffers when there is a lack of funding!
