A very interesting book for US travelers.

How the states got their shapes.

The kids got it for us for Christmas a few years back.

now that I've read the 1st two volumes of the Magi series, I'm less enthused. its a little too much "YA" for me.

The Unbelievable Mr Brownstone series, starting with Feared by Hell, is much better.

For those in Quartzite here is an appropriate book to read while in the desert
Cadillac Desert, 1986 Marc Reisner

2X. An interesting read on water use & the desert. Follow it up with the novel The Water Knife by Paolo Bacgalupi.

As to the best book, since I tend to read 3-4 per week (the happy result of not having a TV) almost anything ends up being the best book!

Jon,
Have you read this? The Match King: Ivar Kreuger, The Financial Genius Behind a Century of Wall Street Scandals Paperback – about the start of pyramid schemes.

Cadillac Desert is probably particularly appropriate right now as the Colorado River Basin states still can’t seem to agree on equitable distribution of the river’s dwindling water supply.

I'm a big Carl Hiaasen fan. Hilarious characters and plots. They would be good when traveling to Florida. Also load up my iPad with cheap BookBub titles. I use either iBooks or Kindle apps on the iPad and iPhone. I have 1491 and 1493 waiting for me to get around to.

+1 on Cadillac Desert. Read it many years ago and if you are interested in the West and the water issues that continue today, it is must reading. It was also a short series documentary on PBS. You can find various videos clips on YouTube. Not sure if the whole series is available:

I use a Kindle Paperwhite and mostly check out digital books from the library that return themselves when due. Also, subscribe to the book lists that send me free Kindle downloads daily.

One thing to be mindful of is using a smart phone or tablet or watching an LED TV at night to read, etc can lead to problems with insomnia and other issues due to blue light emissions.

The Kindle Paperwhite I use is developed to lessen those issues and is worth the investment just from that regard, in addition to providing a good reading platform.

In Canada the Kindle readers don’t allow access to our libraries, but the Kobo readers do. Not as good as Kindle, but much improved over the years, my Kobo allows me to carry a ton of reading material with me. If I run out I can connect with our local library via WiFi on our trips and get more ebooks. I don’t miss the shelf full of books we used to haul along camping. I love being able to search for earlier introductions of characters in the ebooks, especially when I have put a book down for a while.
The books I don’t have on the Kobo are my fly tying manuals.

I read this. It was interesting to see how the early Congress tried to regulate the sizes of the states in order to keep them more or less even in population and resources, and how this occasionally failed: e.g. California, which threatened to leave the U.S. if it were split up. The Idado / Montana story was interesting as well.

I found I can load multiple books from the library then just disconnect the Paperwhite from the network. The books won't be removed till you reconnect to the network.

Also, rather than wait the 2-3 weeks for the books to automatically return, returning them manually for popular books will let the next in line download them sooner...

Recently I'm reading How to Buy Real Estate Overseas by Kathleen Peddicord. While you rest your head you can learn a couple of tricks about real estate markets. I want to buy a little apartment in Spain for retirement and actually this book is helping me a lot to perceive the differences between real estates, because today there are millions of options on the internet when you check listings to buy apartment in Spain and you can't even see what are the pros and cons!
