honey mushrooms

I grew up in mid-Michigan (30 miles north of Bay City) and every fall we'd go out into the woods searching for honey mushrooms. These were the best IMO, even tastier than the famous morels. Mom would sautee them in butter with a little onion, then add sour cream. We then put in on top of boiled potatoes. Fabulous.

armillaria mellea sm.jpg (Note: the photo on wikipedia is overexposed, they don't look so light and yellowish in my experience. The photo I posted is more like I remember them.)

For those of you in the Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota area (and probably NY too), look for Armillaria Mellea around the last 10 days of September, possibly first week of October (depending on weather). It grows out of dead wood like fallen branches and stumps. The stipe will always have a bit of a ring around it right below the cap, and the mushroom has a nice earthy smell. The leaves are falling pretty good around that time, so the mushrooms may be hiding under the leaves or blending in with them. If the fall weather is too dry, there will be few or none to find.

just make sure they aren't Amanitas !! aka Death Cap 'shrooms...

every year a dozen or more people seem to end up dying from sampling these locally here.

Caution is always warranted when harvesting mushrooms. That Amanita's stipe is much more pale and the ring hangs limply. But when in doubt, do without.
