Didn’t camp

While we did not camp this past weekend we were busy and camping is never far from our minds. Went to a Mennonite relief sale. Saw a nice Oliver parked there. It was near Iowa City Iowa. Then on Saturday we stopped at the Palisades state park. In the camping loop was a homemade rig. It’s on an old fold down frame. Unbelievable craftsmanship. He was very friendly and Rita got a “tour”. Air, water, refer, stove, porta potty, step down floor with Central Vacuuming. Had an awning for both sudes but did not have them out as it was a shady site. Here’s a couple pics.

You would need a barn to keep that classic looking shiny, nice interior.

That tractor along with about 20 others were not for sale. They were part of a farm machinery display. They also had a 1907 hit and miss gas engine , about 6 HP with a belt driving an ice cream freezer. I really like the looks of those Oliver’s with the curved tin, especially the 77s and 66s. Oliver’s were a very good tractor and are pretty collectible now.
I have a New Holland that’s served me well and does what I need it to do. Those 1066 Farmalls were working fools too.

1947 Willy’s Jeep Universal/CJ

Right after the war Willy’s switched production to make Jeeps that could be used on the farm and yet still drive the family into town. They were also great for industry as well with a bunch of accessories like on board welder, air compressor etc.
This weekend was also our local tractor show. Here is a picture of my 1947 parked out front of where they have the show. Picture was taken at a different time.

Jeeps

Hi Jim
I was aware these existed as my Dad and the guy who owned the station where we worked were Jeep guys. He had a 1959 and traded it for the first International Scout in Eastern Iowa. Not the best deal ever made. There was a guy in Cedar Rapids who had two jeeps rigged up with trenchers. He put in a lot of water lines, tile and septic fields. In the winter at the ice fisherees a guy would show up with a Jeep equipped with an auger on the back. You’d give him a dollar and he’d bore a bunch of holes for you. Jeeps are definitely part of the fabric of America. There’s a couple old ones for sale just east of us a couple miles. A pickup and a station wagon style. He had about 6 and sold four of them in a couple weeks, these have sat out for a year now.

Beautifully restored Willy’s. When I was in college I was on a road trip with friends and found myself on an island in the 1000 Islands area. We were exploring the woods and came across a rusted out old Jeep. I went back up later and unscrewed the plate on the firewall which says Willy’s Overland Motors Inc. Toledo Ohio with serial CJ-2A 81938. Best I can tell this was a 1946. Would love to have seen it in action. I’m sure it was used as a workhorse to help build the cabins and infrastructure on the island.
