the cookies store settings YOU made on that site for the next time around. if you clear cookies, it tries to guess your location based on your IP address, which in my case is off by about 50 miles.

Have you ever been at a local store talking to a sales clerk about a purchase and the phone rings, they pick it up and start helping the customer on the phone. HELLO, WTF, I'm right here in front of you. If I go to a local store twice without finding what I am looking for, I strongly consider shopping online from then on. I like the idea of shopping local but sometimes the local merchants don't make it easy either.

Yes, or they pick up their cell phone while waiting for you. I then say politely, but very loud, I'll wait until you finish your personal call before waiting on me, and then then go see the manager if either things happen. It won't happen again.

I try to give the young salespeople some slack because they are just learning how to interact with the world at large, but on the other hand I don't mind helping them with that. The behavior that I find annoying is when the young salesperson (it's usually a female) will decide she can't / won't help me with my request then tries to busy herself and ignore me in the hope that I will give up and go away. It doesn't work. I tell her "Miss, I'm not going away; I'm going to stay right here until you figure out how to help me or go get your boss to help me." I don't put up with that stuff anymore.

I’m pretty blunt when that happens. I usually put out some vulgarity and am admonished for that, then more vulgarity as I head for the door. I remind managers and especially owners that they are fighting for their lives if they realize it or not. I buy gasoline and go to the next store. That includes car dealerships. I do not like the lack of courtesy and figure they work for me, not the other way around.

I must be honest, I've never experienced poor customer service when I walk into a store. Maybe it's because I have gray hair or (SEXISM) it's because I'm female.. but, I usually start the conversation with "I need your help," and I say it with a smile. On the other hand, many, many POOR CS interactions when talking on the phone. Almost to the point I would LOVE to slam down the phone.

Seriously, when about 20 years ago I considered, and started but aborted, a career change (from tax & financial planning to computer database design), one of my biggest complaints about computers was that poor user interface design was the biggest stumbling block to maximizing computers' abilities to make our lives better . . . things have gotten exponentially worse!

I avoided UI and other user facing stuff most of my career and worked on systems internals, mostly interfacing hardware to software by writing device drivers. not many folks understand the hardware-software interface, so it was quite lucrative.

They use facial recognition software (from just N. of San Jose), and, based mostly on your hat, they ID'ed your location.

You were "close to the machine", as they say.

Addendum

I got an email yesterday from Lowe's saying my wire shelving had arrived at my local store (Pace, FL, not Metairie, LA). When I went down there they had a hard time finding the shipment, but eventually did. It took a while.

It turns out that the closet dimensions on my older Escape 21 must be a bit different than on Fred's newer 21. But the wire drawers will still fit, good. Now I'm working on my clumsy installation. All's well that ends well.

If you think it is hard to purchase you should try building and maintaining the website where you can buy things

Bypass the BIOS and directly address the hardware. Takes many lines of assembler code but is tight and fast.

I finally got the shelves installed. The installation is not as pretty as Red Dog's, but it's good enough for me.

I just filled out a survey from Lowe's about my customer experience when ordering the shelves. Heh. My keyboard is still smoking.
