Gas Tank Recall on MKX

My wife's vehicle is a 2008 Lincoln MKX. Received an interesting recall notice from Lincoln yesterday. It reads in part:

"The Lincoln Motor Company is conducting a safety recall (14S22) in certain 2007-2008 MKX vehicles registered in corrosion states. In these states, where road salt is frequently used in the winter months, it may be possible for the fuel tank to corrode, resulting in a fuel leak."

Only trouble is, they don't use road salt in San Antonio. No need. Must be based on Texas alone. Even up north in Amarillo and Dallas, they don't use salt but sand. Checked it, and it looks to be corrosion free. I think I'll pass.

Can you inspect the top of the fuel tank where corrosion is likely to occur due to trapped debris ? Considering the consequences of failure, you may want to let a dealer make the call and assume responsibility.

I haven't, but when I look at how it's designed, there's a steel 'carrier' for the gas tank that completely encloses the front of it. The photo I took is from the rear of the vehicle. Hard to see how anything could make it's way to the top of the tank, but I guess anything is possible. In any case, the recall specifically mentions corrosion from road salt. We don't have that here.

Ford Edge owners might want to look for the same recall, since it is the same vehicle.

I thought the shielding material along only a selected "dent" in the tank was strange, until I realized that it probably lines up with the propeller shaft (drive shaft to the rear diff) that this front wheel drive MKX doesn't have.

Yep, you hit it exactly Brian. FWD. If I were in the market for a new one (I'm not) I'd go for the AWD model. They're great in the rain.

The next owners are often affected by a recall.

I had a 78 Bronco with a factory " skid plate"'to protect the gas tank. It trapped debris, rock and road drivers and rusted the tank to the point of leaking at which time I changed the tank out. It can happen.
